Making folders killed my whole site

Ok, I’m slow sometimes but I finally noticed that I could make folders inside the site folder, and so group my zillions of pages logically.

So I did. And dragged all the pages into the correct folders. It looked good.

I knew that “the folder structure will be reflected in the structure of the HTML pages generated by Freeway” so when I uploaded and saw that freeway was deleting the old website as it went I was not alarmed.

It was, I assumed, just installing the new structure.

But when I went to check, the entire website was 404 by all means of access.

I waited a few hours and did a couple more uploads just in case there was a cache issue, but nothing.

I can’t ring my isp because they are closed for the weekend, so I’m reinstalling the previous version, without the folders and it seems to be coming back again (it’ll be a while uploading yet as I have some big movies on there).

So - was I supposed to do something else when I made the folders?

What I do wrong?

Thanks

Tom

The first page of the web site has to be outside a folder, e.g.

If you’ve moved that page into a folder the folder name will now be part of
its address:

so going to yourcompany.com - This website is for sale! - yourcompany Resources and Information. will now give a 404 error.

Make sure the root/home/index page of your site (normally called index.html
or index.htm) isn’t in a folder as that’s the page a browser looks for when
you enter a website address.

Nope - but what you will probably find that your Browser was autocompleting links to the old pages that are no longer there.

The most important page is your index page which should have the file name of index.html and provided that it is at yoursite.com/index.html then your site will work fine.

If you have renamed that index page to something else or it is not at the root of your site that is when you will get into trouble.

I cleared the caches and also tried a browser I very seldom use, but that could still have been as reason I guess.

I haven’t renamed the index page, but it is inside a folder. Is that the problem? If I take it out and place it directly inside the site folder will that make a difference?

Ah, sorry I missed your answer Roger.

Ok, than makes perfect sense - and by default I assume that goes for all the pages to which I have web forwarding, yes?

The thing to remember is that if no page is specified the browser looks for
an ‘index’ page (most commonly called ‘index.html’), thus with:

the browser will look for yourcompany.com - This website is for sale! - yourcompany Resources and Information.

similarly with a folder, e.g.

the browser will look for yourcompany.com - This website is for sale! - yourcompany Resources and Information.

For pages called anything else you have to give the full address.

If you’ve moved pages into folders you need to make sure that any links are
updated with the new address.
