Master Page Problem

Master Pages are great except I can’t get it to work on one major time consuming issue.

My website consists of three in-line divs - Container div, right column div, left column div and footer div. (thanks to David Owen for that little gem) and all works great.

Now the issue. My site has 6 sections all of which use the left column to display links for it’s own section so each section has it’s own master page which was originally spawned from THE master template. The right column contains the site content and as soon as I add content it loses the link to the master page and therefore if I add a new link to the master page, it’s not added to the child pages - I only get the Use Master Content option on the container div, which reverts the entire page back to master content and not the left column div. So now I have to add the link to every page by hand!

Is there a way to only change one element on a page and keep it permanently linked to the masterpage?

EG: Header keep linked to Master

Left Column1 keep linked to Master1

Left Column2 keep linked to Master2

Hope this doesn’t sound confusing.

Dear Lee

As far as I know, inline items don’t work on a Master Page, as you
have just discovered. So the only answer is to redesign your site so
that it doesn’t use inline items on a Master Page. Sorry.

Unless someone else can come up with a suggestion…

It’d be nice if you could do that, but the Master page holds all the content of the entire page. There’s no bits and pieces that can be mastered in specific areas and not others.

You can use inline items in a Master Page, just not the way you’d like too.

Can some fab person out there write an action or something that will synchronize specific areas of a page to a specific area on a master page, like a links menu for eg?.

It would be a case of select the area of the page you want to sync,
• add the action,
• the palette would ask Sync with what?
• you choose on the pop up menu which master to sync to
• a secondary pop up then asks for which part.
• From now on all changes made in that box would be reflected on any page section in the site that had the action applied.

I’d even pay for an action that did this as I’ve invested a lot of money in this software because of the benefits of the master pages alone only to find what I need it to do it cant!!!

Please help

Have you looked at TIm Plumb’s Simple Include Pro Action suite? This
can work in both a server-assembled (shtml includes) or Freeway-
assembled manner (which is server-agnostic).
