Meta Tags

Will adding zip codes to my meta tags help or hinder. I serve about 8 different area codes/cities. I’m looking to secure page listings when people search by zip or city.

Thanks

I found this at SwerveMedia

Say, for example, you own a widget manufacturing and distribution business. You supply several types of widgets and offer several types of distribution services. This information is listed within your site, however, there are several other search words that are not associated with your site. With meta-tags you can include searchable keywords including: several local locations, cities, counties, zip codes, or other global locations that you service. You can include keywords related to certifications you have, associated industries that you do business with, suppliers, equipment, distribution methods, and contractors.

Thanks for your information I thought this was OK to do. Just didn’t want to cause problems with the search engines.

A salesman stopped by my business this past week. She wanted to help my get top listing in Google. We went to the office and I typed in my business category and the zip code. I came up number one. She stammered and said,” Well, now check Yahoo”. Number one again. She then left seeing I no need for her services.
This got me to thinking about the surrounding area codes and the benefit of listing them in my Meta tags box.
Thanks

Stepping in somewhat after-the-fact. Google has decreased the emphasis on meta-tags. While they are read, page content and internal/external links are given a higher priority. Some of the highest priorities are given to the page title in the url, the topmost headers and of course how many other sites link to your site. RSS feeds are now included in that calculation.

The proliferation of meta-tags is partly responsible for this focus. If you throw in too many meta-tags, some search engines may even ignore the tags, labeling you as a ‘link-farm’ of meta-tags.
