missing index.html page

This is my first time posting here. I need help desperately! I’m using Freeway 5 on an Intel Mac running Leopard. On opening the site I’m working on I found that the “Index.html” page is missing! I did several hours of updates to this site and everything was fine. When I go back to the last saved backup, the index.html page is showing in the site folder but is not visible in the file list when I open the site to make changes to it. Can someone please tell me how to fix this. Thank you in advance for your time. J

This is a bit confusing. You say the index.html page is showing in the site folder, ok. That actually only appears after you publish your site. Then you say it is not visible in the file list… you mean in the site pane on the left after you open the Freeway document?

The site list on the left of your screen only shows the Titles of your pages eg Home, Contact Us, Products etc. and are notnecessarily what the pages file names actually are. For that you need to look in the page inspector pane.

Click on the page in the site pane (on the left) and in the Page inspector you will see the Page Title and the next box down is the File name.

Select each of the pages in turn in the site pane and chech the inspector until you finf your index.html.

It may be that Freeway has renamed the page in question.

If you have the Title as Home then Freeway may have changed it in the File name to home.html

If that is the case then go to the page that you want to be your index page and just change it in the ‘File’ box in the inspector to index.html and hit the return key.

Freeway is sometimes too smart for its own good and changes the File name to a shortened version of what you have entered as the page Title.

Thanks so much for your posts. Yes, I’m saying that the “index.html” file is showing in the file window of the system when I open the site folder but it is not showing up in the list of pages on the left side of the FW window. I have looked at every page in the list window and the index page is not there. I know the name of the page as well as the “index.html” file name but it’s still not there. Any more thoughts? Thanks again, Jeri

As David mentioned, the page name is not necessarily index.html. Have you checked the name of each page in the inspector?

Which page are you expecting to be your index.html page.

Is it there but just not with the file name index.html

It may be that Freeway has renamed the page in question. If you have the Title as Home then Freeway may have changed it in the File name to home.html or similar.

If that is the case then go to the page that you want to be your index page and just change it in the ‘File’ box in the inspector to index.html and hit the return key.

Thank you again for responding! I have gone through each of the 50 some pages and looked at each one and none of them are the page that has been the index.html page. This is my dilemma, the page has disappeared from the FW list entirely. The strange part is that I can see the file name in the list of files in the Site folder on my hard drive. There isn’t a misnaming problem, the page has just disappeared from the within FW. I could even open the file and see the source code in Dreamweaver but because FW is ‘closed’, I wouldn’t be able to get the file back into FW. Jeri

It sounds like you may have either deleted the original page you were using for the index.html page, or you reworked it into another kind of page. The file you see in the site folder is probably left over from when you published your site at an earlier point in the development process, but it is only a file that is generated by Freeway when you publish. It is not something you can edit within Freeway as it is an html file. If you have indeed lost the page from the Freeway document i’m afraid you may have to rebuild it.

I have been rebuilding all day and now I’m trying to upload and I get this error message:

“Could not generate the HTML file ‘3dsystemssolidim.html’ because a file is in use. Check you have write permission to your export folder and that the file is not open inn another application.”

Do you have any idea what this means? I’m really stumped and bewildered at this point. Thanks again guys…

I have seen this when the page is more than 32K in size and open in a browser window somewhere.

Try closing or quitting all your browsers. Also, if you choose a new site folder, that can help too.
