MODX Actions

For the Action writers:

Ever since I posted my MODX/Freeway tutorial I’ve received some interest from who I presume are FW users asking about a MODX Action Suite. I have no intention of developing an Action (or know how to do it), so maybe it would be of interest to one of you. Just throwin’ it out there.

Hi Todd,

while I can’t speak for an action-developer there is one thing to note:

An action-writer needs to know everything about the product (MODx in this case) or even use it for his own purposes or at least a detailed description of what the action should produce.

The known action-suites are Joe Muscara’s Expression Engine and Max’s WebYep. Furthermore there is Tim who (if he needs something) simply writes them (I’d like to have a look in his treasure-box btw. - I’m sure it’s stunning). Walter currently develops inlay where he (probably) needs a suite as well.

So the only chance to get somebody in is either paid, adapted, adopted or more or less multiple re-usable actions for “global” purposes (e.g path-adjustments or special-resources-placement).

I’m in-mid the process of understanding WordPress and am amazed how cool it could work with Freeway and am seeking for “actions writing support” as well but haven’t had the guts to ask (or enough money).

Cheers

Thomas

Action developers seem to have better success when a specific process and
outcome is described. I have very little clues about action writing, but if
I can describe what I want to end up with and maybe how I want to start
out, they seem to be able to find the link between the two.

Sometimes that means you have to decide which steps need action help, and
which can get by without it. Then it’s just a matter of inspiring them to
the task.

I looked at ModX a few years ago, but I never really did anything with it. My 10,000-foot view (and foggy memory) is that it doesn’t require a whole lot from a template that you couldn’t do with Markup Items or CrowBar instances. Can you give me a closer look? Do you have some templates that work in ModX that I could look at? It’s not at all clear to me what an Action would need to do.

You’re absolutely right, the process doesn’t require Actions, at least not in my opinion. But we all know how FW users love their Actions. Does WebYep technically need Actions to use with FW? No. Yet people love to use them. It is what it is.

Honestly, I don’t know if there are enough potential MODX/FW users out there to warrant the effort, though I can’t imagine there are many more Joomla/FW users either. In any case I just wanted to mention it in case there was interest. I have no personal investment in it either way.

I can send over the FW file used in the demo if you like. There’s not much to it but it should provide a basic idea.

Hi Thomas,

I agree. My post (perhaps incorrectly) assumed that there were Action writers who already have some experience with how MODX works and knew whether it’s a good candidate for an Action or not. I’m simply passing along what might be of interest to someone else. If I had the time right now to get more involved I would gladly help, but I don’t.

Walter,

There’s a download link for the demo file at the bottom of the page http://xiiro.com/musings/2013/02/05/modx-freeway/.

As I point out in the tutorial the main issues I found have to do with resource paths. It’s possible they may be due to my lack of familiarity with FW so one of you will be better-equipped to understand where the problem lies: with me, MODX, FW or all three. Tim P. did look into this at one point and was kind enough to write a stop-gap Action, but if I remember correctly the path problem ran a bit deeper.

Todd

Please do.

I did quite a bit of work in my Style Accessors library to work around this, maybe some of that can be re-used here.
