Moving from one Host to another problem

I get the same under construction page for your domain (with logo) if
I enter the URL with or without the www.

Well, I’m stumped. It’s now been well over 72 hours and I can’t
upload using the domain, only IP. The website isn’t viewing by URL
or IP (I get the cPanel/Apache page), and if I use the www. prefix I
see only the old site, and just trying the domain as an address
returns a Page cannot be found.

It couldn’t be a router issue could it, as other people say they can
view it?

Thanks for that Mike. It seems as though something this end is preventing me from operating this domain under usual procedures.

I might try re-starting the router.

I see the same, which reminds me of a similar problem some years ago.
In that case the host had a holding page with the file name
“index.htm” while my FW generated page was “index.html”. I only found
this out by checking the uploaded files via FTP (using Fetch).
Removing the former was an instant cure. It might be worth checking
you haven’t a similar duplication as FW will only replace files that
are exactly the same name.

Here’s hoping. Colin.

This server is using Name-based Virtual Hosting. Unless they also
provide a “back door” through another means, something like

http://72.29.84.123/~username/sitename/

Then all you can get by IP is the main server’s “Welcome” page. Or a
404, if you’re not so lucky.

Name-based Virtual Hosting works by reading the request header from
the visitor’s browser and working out which folder to serve documents
from based on the hostname in the request. Through this method, a
single very modest server can host thousands of sites off of a single
IP address (saving money and resources and making more profits).

you’ll have to enlighten me on where to find the extra IP info

Well I am not entirely sure myself

Something like

Some caches take an awfully long time to clear. You have a slight
amount of control over this if you are able to change the DNS records
for the domain. If you are, then you can set the TTL (Time To Live) to
an absurdly low number for a while, and then make your change, and
then make it a more reasonable time later on.

But you’ve already made the change, and others can see it, and you
can’t, so maybe the thing to do is change YOUR DNS settings to use
OpenDNS or another not-your-ISP’s-DNS provider. OpenDNS is free and
very very very nice.

Thanks Colin. Checked and I have only got an index.html although the original site is showing an index.htm

David, your link works. Thanks.

… so maybe the thing to do is change YOUR DNS settings…

Walter

Walt. New territory for me. Don’t want to screw things up. Change my DNS settings…of what sorry? Apologies for my ignorance.

Sorry I wasn’t clearer. Go to http://opendns.com and follow the simple instructions to change your Mac’s DNS settings to use their servers.

When you signed up with your ISP, they probably gave you the IP addresses for their servers (or they might be using DHCP to push them to you). If they have their DNS servers set to a ridiculously long refresh time, that’s one reason why you might be seeing the behavior you’ve described. Changing your Network preferences to use OpenDNS is a non-destructive change, you can always switch back to your current settings if you like.

OpenDNS caches the DNS information, to be sure, but their caches are checked and refreshed more often than most, plus the fact that they have such broad usage means that their caches are more likely to be primed with up-to-date information.

Excellent Walter thank you. It was working swimmingly until I click on Network, then I remembered I have this annoying ‘bug’ that I think came with the last System update, that constantly tells me ‘My network settings have been changed by another application’ and the only way to get rid of it is to Lock to prevent further changes.

I posted a thread about this a while ago and I was not the only one with the problem. I’ll check for further updates again.

Walter, your solution was spot on as usual. I managed to get round the annoying ‘bug’ and made the DNS changes. Worked instantly. You’re a genius. Thank you.

I’m with Tiscali ISP in case anybody wants to know.

David. Curiously enough when I mentioned in the post above about this annoying problem, I tried it once more and didn’t get the message by Locking and then Unlocking and didn’t get the message. Worth a try if you haven’t already tried it.

To be honest I am reticent about getting into that never ending circle again - I would rather leave it alone until somebody tells me the cure.
