I’m looking for NAS recommendations that offer similar functionality to this [http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10567](http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10567). If you use something you like let me know.

Hi Todd

Looks a really neat management console, and looks much better than any
ones I’ve seen, Buffalo, WD, Netgear. Probably even the Drobo, which
nearly manages itself.

Must take a closer look at the Lacie offering.

Look at Synology too, [http://www.synology.com/products/](http://www.synology.com/products/). I’m leaning towards these guys.

I have a WD World Book thingy. It’s desperately slow. The problem
must be internal as it’s on a 1Gb across-desk network.

Yeah, I’ve heard that the WD NAS uses a dirt-slow implementation of AppleShare Filing Protocol from some free Unix port from the 90s, and that if you connect to it over the Windows protocol, it’s quite a lot faster. You might want to try that. SMB for the win?

Never seen or used the Synology, but they do get a good review from
various Mags here in the UK, PC Pro, Macworld & MacUser. The DS411 is
quite a recent beast which is the one I would go for if I had to buy one
today. I’d probably up the memory from 512k to whatever makes sense as
memory is pretty cheap.

I saw recently a chart detailing the speed comparisons of various
devices and networks but I could only locate these numbers:

USB Hi-Speed (USB 2.0) 480 Mbit/s 60 MB/s
FireWire (IEEE 1394b) 800[43] 786.432 Mbit/s 98.304 MB/s
Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-X) 1 Gbit/s 125 MB/s
USB super speed (USB 3.0) 5 Gbit/s 625 MB/s
Thunderbolt 10 Gbit/s × 2 1.25
GB/s × 2

USB3 is not currently on Macs, although I guess it’s on Macs and Apple
could turn it on if they chose to?

And Thunderbolt has never taken off in any sensible way, maybe this year
will be it. The cables are so complex and expensive and I believe the
chipsets only intel can supply are prohibitively expensive.

Part of the problem is that it’s taken so long for Thunderbolt-ready peripherals to make it to market. Now that they’re finally gaining a little momentum perhaps TB will gain greater acceptance.

The DS411 is a beast. I do like the DS212+ also. Nice, for just a 2 bay.

It uses different hardware, so Apple would need to add that hardware. You can buy PCI cards for the big Mac towers that add USB3 ports.

Thanks, but I’m already using SMB.
