Need help with html background color

greetings,

i’ve found myself turning from seo consultant to web designer for a small project. my client is convinced her current design is a-ok (http://www.agingartfully.com). i am not so convinced but am not being paid to care, so i have to have maintain 3 color background scheme.

wondering how to do this using freeway.
here is the mockup link: http://www.jayarchibald.com/amygorman

now, she wants to use the white with black type, so i need another html layer.

i’m fininding this all to be a real pain, dealing with this html box when i’m trying to select something around it is quite annoying. i can lock it and set it to visible=no but the back and forth and difficulty of UI seems so, dreamweaver.

if i create a blue html layer to float on the red background behind all other layers, then all my graphics on top of that show red as a background when i use html graphic effects>shadows in FW5. i can place these in another graphic box with the proper blue background, but this is kind of a pain.

now, to add another layer seems to complicate everything that much more.

please, any advice?

jay

is there a decent solution to this that i’m missing all together? 3 background colors, imo, is a nasty adventure and there’s a reason i am not experienced in this endeavor, but i still need to know what’s going on, regardless of the vomit-factor of the design as saying “no” to a client is, even with bad taste involved, bad business.

3 color background? I see a red background and a blue page color. Am I missing something? The tan color is division background color on the original page.

Not a bad start on your sample page. Your shadow edge border on the page area is backwards on the left side though.

Don’t get background color and page color confused. The background color is the red color outside the page borders. For the blue page color, set an html box to cover the page area of your layout and make the background color of that blue. This is the parent division. Just think of the parent division as the “page” and place all you other content inside that.

Just a quick look at your site, Jay, suggest a couple of answers:

If you hold down the ‘Command’ (Apple) key and ‘Alt’ key together then
repeatedly click over the box you want, you can drill down to it.
Press ‘Return’ and you can edit the content. Alternatively select the
item from the Site Panel on the left of your screen and press
‘Return’. (If you can’t see individual items, click the disclosure
triangle for the page. All will be revealed).

You can also drag the item down the Site Panel (or press
‘Command’ (Apple) key and ‘+’ key, to bring an item temporarily to the
top. Make you edits and slide it back down, if needed. in the site
panel. (NB Counter intuitive it may be, but the top layer is always at
the bottom of the list)!

all my graphics on top of that show red as a background when i use
html graphic effects>shadows in FW5.

Shadows require transparency in the image, supported by GIF and PNG
files. Try setting you images to PNG and ‘Millions’ of colours in the
Inspector - third, page like button along the top - and you should no
longer be seeing red.

I shall refrain from commenting on the site, except that we have all
come across clients like yours!

What’s probably happening is the shadows are being rendered into a
solid (non-translucent) format, GIF or JPEG, using the page
background colour as the thing to render into. You could try putting
those things into a ‘parent’ container and filling that container
with the desired ‘background’ colour for that area. Or unlayering
those items so they can merge the underlying elements into the shadow
effect properly.
