new user - teething troubles

Hi Everyone,

I was very impressed with the 30 day trail and made the tutorials with no trouble. I’m not a very techie minded mac user.

Now I’m buidling my first website with Freeway Pro 5 and am finding glitches.

  1. Master page problems. Changes to MP not being reflected on other pages. Could that be because I initially changed an MP item on my home page. When I realised my error and changed it on the MP, it is correct on the other pages but not on my home page. & what do I have to do to get it change on the home page if the MP is now correct.

  2. I made some navigation buttons as per tutorial but decided that I didn’t like where I placed them. Even though I’d locked the items, I found it impossible to move them as one item to a preferred spot. Is it not possible to do this? In the end, I’ve re-made them 5 times to get them in the place I want.

I have planned my website but then seeing things on the page, I want to rejig them visually. I’m finding this process quite difficult with out easily being able to drag and drop items. In my ignorance it seems as if I’m going to have to rebuild my site each time…

Thanks so much for any guidance… I have looked through the knowledge base but haven’t found anything related to this.

what do I have to do to get it change on the home page if the MP is now correct.

Try Page>Reapply Master but be careful that some items may be duplicated on the page and need to be deleted. You can see the duplications in the left sidebar.

Even though I’d locked the items, I found it impossible to move them as one item to a preferred spot.

If you shift/select the items you want to move as one item and go to Item>Group, they move nicely as one unit. You can Ungroup to restore the items’ individual flexibility. Very useful function.

  1. Master page problems. Changes to MP not being reflected on
other pages. Could that be because I initially changed an MP item
    on my home page.

Welcome Tanya - and bingo! That’s exactly the reason why. You can
edit an item that’s from a master page on any ‘regular’ page, but
this breaks the link to the original master page item. This means
subsequent changes to the master item won’t affect that ‘unlinked’
child item.

But fear not, all you need to do to fix this is to select the item
(on the regular page) and use the Use Master Content and Use Master
Settings checkboxes in the Inspector palette.

  1. I made some navigation buttons as per tutorial but decided that
I didn’t like where I placed them. Even though I’d locked the
items, I found it impossible to move them as one item to a preferred
    spot.

If you’ve grouped items then they are bound up within a containing
item. When you try to move an item within a group you can only move
it withoin the confines of that group container. You have to select
the group itself, not an item within it, and move that. Try pointing
and clicking on the edge of the group, or perhaps click-drag from off
to one side and across the group. This will select the group itself.

If you have trouble moving the group but you’ve managed to select it,
just use the arrow keys on your keyboard - or try altering the
numbers in the Dimensions fields in the Inspector palette.

Try Page>Reapply Master but be careful

Be careful indeed. This is rather too much like calling in the
builders when you just want to re-hang a picture on the wall.

It is much better to start with the Use Master Contents and Use
Master Settings checkboxes, found in the Inspector palette for any
item that is or was once linked to a master page original item.

If you shift/select the items you want to move as one item and go to
Item>Group, they move nicely as one unit. You can Ungroup to restore
the items’ individual flexibility. Very useful function.

You can of course select multiple items at once and move them en
masse without having to group first!

But I suspect part of the problem lies in the items already being
grouped, which limited how much the individual items could be moved.

Hi Jim & Keith,

Thanks so much for this advice. It all makes sense. Good luck with all your projects.

Keith,

I take your point about page>reapply master but when I looked in my inspector, I couldn’t find either Use Master Contents or Use Master Settings. Is it under the general tab?

You must be inspecting an object that originated from something on a
master page. (If you copy and paste something it won’t be from the
master.) That’s all there is to it!

  1. Select an object
  2. Look in the Inspector palette, first tab.

If it came from a master page object then you’ll see those two
checkboxes. If it didn’t come from a master page object you won’t.

Thanks v much. A bit embarrassed 'cos I just discovered that & was about let you know!

Another Q if that’s okay. Can I put a small item on top of a master page item? What I want to do is put “home”, “about” etc… on the banner at the top, on each indivual page. I’ve had random success in that it’s worked on 3 of 5 pages but not on 2. The words are there on the page but when I test the site in my browser, it failed to work on certain pages.

Also odd was that one link lit up all the roller overs and failed to link. I thought I’d done it just as in the tutorial but no doubt I’m a bit boss eyed by now! And slipped up somewhere.

Think I need to call it a day for a while but thanks again for the tips.
cheers,
T
