No follow hyperlink

I am told to make links back to my site no follow. Rather than just a standard hyperlink such as http://www.mysite.com how would I enter this as a “no follow” link?

Select the element you have assigned the link to (either an image or a run of text) and open the Hyperlink dialog. Click the extended button there, and in the popup, press New. In the pop-popup, enter:

  • Name: rel
  • Value: nofollow

(If you’re looking at this in mail, don’t enter the back-ticks in the field, they are here to make this look nice on the Web archive of the list.)

You will need to repeat this for each link that you need to mark in this manner.

Do you always do as you’re “told”?

A nofollow link is basically telling search engines that you do not endorse
the link - links are part of how Google determines “popularity” as part of
their ranking. You’re not saying that you hate where the link goes, but
that you have no special love for it either.

That said, the easiest way to do this in Freeway Pro is through the Edit
Hyperlink window - either select your existing hyperlink or select the text
you wish to make a link and choose menu Edit > Hyperlink… before you are
done, click the Extended interface button, make a New attribute, name it
rel (lowercase REL) and give it the value nofollow (all one word). You’re
done!

It’s also beneficial when you have multiple links on the same page that all point to the same url which might be interpreted by search engines as an attempt to skew ranking. It seems like one of those important but often overlooked details to watch out for.
