If you are having trouble with the application on your machine, then normal system maintenance is is order (ie repair permissions, verify disk via Disk Utility, even redownload FW5 just to be sure you have a fresh/clean copy)

This is an incredible long-shot, but when opening FW for the first time, it actually does write to itself when you input the serial number. All other alterations are made to the preference file. Perhaps the application has somehow changed ‘owners’ when you moved the application to the Applications folder or some other write-prevented location. You may want to move the app to the desktop from the dmg, run it to input the serial number, and then move the app to its final location.

Personally, I just store this app to my desktop; a) I am the only one using it, b) I have a few different versions for various files that allow me to drag-n-drop and c) the app’s updated often enough that I want the visual cue in front of me.

By the way, you did move it out of the expanded dmg disk image before trying to run the app, right?

As far as the forum access, I have not run into any trouble with the system in quite some time. Granted there were some teething troubles in the beginning, but what system doesn’t? I would look at the browser and your system/connection as the culprit. Who knows, this might even be tied to a permissions problem system-wide and you are experiencing two symptoms of the same problem.

One additional comment: The Applications folder shouldn’t be
write-protected if you’re logged in as an admin-level user. If it is,
repair permissions pronto: launch Disk Utility, select your hard disk
in the left, and click the Repair Permissions button.
