OpenType and Word on a PC

My client is using a PC. She has installed an OpenType typeface, consisting of the following:

roman
italic
heavy
heavy italic

All four cuts appear in the font menu in InDesign, but only the ‘normal’ roman cut appears in her Microsoft Word (2007).

Any ideas why the other cuts are not showing?

Thank you

Perhaps they are being subsumed by the Bold and Italic buttons in the
Word interface. It’s going to be hard to tell exactly, but if this is
a true italic, rather than a slanted roman, you might be able to tell
by selecting some type in that face, pressing the Italic button in the
formatting toolbar or inspector, and then looking carefully at the
text. If it has proper italic features, then that’s what’s happened
here. If it’s just a skewed version of the roman original, then I’m
afraid this is not good news.

Hi Walter

I think you are right. The italic and bold buttons in MS Word (on a PC) are ‘activating’ the italic, heavy and heavy italic cuts of the typeface.

This is OK, but it does mean we can’t use the Light or Semi Bold weights of the typeface.

The various weights show in the font menu of my Word For Mac. It seems that Word on a PC doesn’t allow more than roman, italic, bold and bold italic?

That’s kinda scary, but hardly surprising…
