OS X Messages Beta

Has anyone tried the new iChat replacement, Messages, beta? I want to see what the hubbub is about but I don’t know anyone who has installed it.

The selling feature is the instant access to send Messages to IOS devices. Other than that it’s pretty much just iChat.

Ah. I’m an Adium user, not iChat. Was curious as to whether it was worth a switch.

Thanks,

If your familiar with Crackberry messaging then it’s very similar. Best part is it’s free between IOS devices of course, but you can get caught paying for messages from those without IOS devices.

How do those without iOS send messages to Messages app?

Messages runs on OS X so (I think) you just need to send it to the Apple ID email address (or GoogleTalk account) for someone who already has Messages installed.

Messages.app can talk to other Messages.app people, AIM, bunch of other protocols IIRC.

Sadly enough MSN isn’t supported.
Nevertheless … it works like a charm though. I can send messages now from my desktop to other people’s mobile.

Hmm, I hadn’t noticed that. No great loss.

What I meant was, how does anyone else besides iOS or Messages users send messages via iMessage (the protocol under Messages)? Chuck’s comment implies that there is a way, and there is none that I know of. AFIAK, all iMessages are free, and Messages on Mac cannot send via SMS/MMS.
