[OT] Postbox Mac mail app

Just wondering is anyone uses Postbox mail app?

I’m just beginning to explore if I can use Postbox
[http://www.postbox-inc.com/] to replace Entourage, i don’t like the new
Outlook of Office 2011 and really want to get away from the MASSIVE
entourage BLOB!! Currently 8.5Gb and growing.

I use it. I picked it up solely for the conversation threading that was similar to Gmail but couldn’t be set up similarly in Apple Mail. I don’t use a whole lot of other features, but the message threading is a great feature.

Account setups were easy, as expected. I also use SpamSieve with it and that works great. Account grouping is nice so I have all my business accounts in one group and my store in another. Plus I like the search functions as they seem more accurate than Apple Mail and it’s a breeze to see which items are marked as spam.

If you have any other questions about it, post back and I’ll let you know if I’ve used that feature.

Thanks Dan, I’ve only started using it a couple of days and only set it
up with IMAP accounts so far, which means I can still get to them in
other ways.

I will certainly feed more questions/comments back here. I’ve been using
Entourage, with it’s unmanageable single BLOB db file, from before Apple
introduced Mail otherwise I’d probably be with that.

I’ve been wanting to try this for a while and finally did so
yesterday…very impressive. Apple Mail has always been satisfactory
for my modest email needs but having tried Postbox I’m seriously
considering switching. Well thought out and executed. Definitely worth a
look.

Yeah, however it is a huge resource hog like Firefox is. Looking at my Activity Monitor on my Mac here it’s taking up to 700mb of memory which is huge for an app.

If I load up Apple Mail for Snow Leopard, it’s taking up about 60mb of memory. I’ll probably be switching back to Apple Mail in Lion as I do like the interfaces Apple creates and this 2.5 update for Postbox is a bit over the top for my needs.

Looks closer to replacing the look and feel of Outlook for Mac then it does Apple Mail.

I’ve been using GyazMail for a number of years and have always found it
satisfactory. Postbox looks interesting, though.

I had forgotten about that one. I tried GyazMail when it was initially
released a few years back and really liked it, not sure why I didn’t
make the switch.

It does seem a bit less responsive than Mail. I’ll wait to see what Lion
has to offer which, from what I’ve seen regarding Mail, might be worth
the wait. Still, at $20 it seems a viable option, though if it were
still priced at $40 I wouldn’t even consider it, nice as it is.

I like PostBox mainly for the message threading. Looking forward to see what Mail is going to do in Lion.

There is also Thunderbird from Mozilla and it’s free, v5.0 was released yesterday - have not yet taken it out for a spin.

Hi Roger,

Good to see I’m not the only one using GyazMail. It doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles but what it does works exceedingly well - sends and receives. It has threading and works flawlessly with SpamSieve. If it had text formating it would be a winner.
Mail I now only use for sending out email web pages from safari.

Be warned there’s an issue with TB deleting mail from your inbox. Though the issue might have been fixed with v.5

Does anyone have a simple way to categorize inbox messages (apple mail)? For example I save many of the post on this forum but have trouble finding them for the content I wanted, and sometime the subject line isn’t the clearest.

Might be worth the $20 for Postbox for that feature…

Set up a “smart mailbox” in apple mail and designate it to put everything from @freewaytalk.net there. Then set it to show the emails as threads

Hi

Try MailTags.

I’ve just started using it. You can add Keywords, use Projects, colour code, and link to Events.

I will say also that Postbox 2.5 has quirks when rendering HTML emails. Between testing 2.1 and the new 2.5, the new 2.5 is more quirky and ends up rendering most emails incorrectly.

Interesting, I haven’t found that to be the case.
