Thanks for all the advice and hints guys. By a combination of this Forum,
Adobe PhotoShop Forum, and our devoted local Oxford Mac Users Group
(OxMacUg), at long last, and obviously dating right back to my changeover to
OSX 10.3, it would appear that we have actually identified the problem. The
solution however might still take a while to fix, as I inherited my version
of PhotoShop CS when I purchased my LapTop via eBay, and consequently do not
currently have access to a PhotoShop CS Installation Disc.
The problem would indeed seem to be the lack of the “Adobe Unit Types”
Scripts file, somehow deleted when the 10.3 &/or 10.4 Archive and Install
takes place. What is irritating is that while the Adobe Forum answer was
originally posted in December 2003,and while the Adobe Tech Support article
to which Trevor and Peter linked is dated April 2007, a 10.3&/or 10.4
Archive and Install, or indeed re-install, still breaks PhotoShop CS
today!!!
I have searched all my HDs and backups, and while I found a hint of the
“Adobe Unit Types” Scripts file last evening, today I can’t track it down,
so if anyone is still running PhotoShop CS - aka PhotoShop 8 - and could
mail me directly a copy of the “Adobe Unit Types” Script file, I really
would be extremely grateful. This File can be found in
Computer>System>Library>ScriptingAdditions.
Many thanks for all your input, at least we have now identified the problem,
all I need now is to re-install the solution.

Thanks Nathan, tried all that, but no luck. In fact in one respect
it’s made things a bit worse.
For example, take an eps file which can be both a Photoshop and
Illustrator filetype. If you ‘get info’ for this then 50% or whatever
of your files are going to try and open up in the wrong programme.
But as Neil and me are experiencing, the files are ‘trying’ to open,
the application launches (or comes into focus for want of a better
phrase) but the file doesn’t actually open.

If you select your file and “File>Get Info” then go down to “Open
With” it should say Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop depending
on the file you have selected. If it doesn’t then change it. Then
click the “Change All…” button. This should help with any file
being opened in the wrong application.
