Page wont stop loading

http://proofs.datagrafixpromotions.com/greggs_samples.html

I cant tell if it is something in the code hanging this page or my server. It loads oK, but keeps waiting for something…

Can anybody figure out what is holding it up?

Thanks for any insight.

It doesn’t do this here, although it does take a while to load.

I’d advise finding ways to split it up somehow, as that’s large
enough to put many people off browsing it properly.

(BTW, Heather, better not look at this page as it’ll get your blood
boiling! It resizes the browser window.

Greg, the current layout seems to be rather in-flow-based. This means
that your spread pairs don’t stay aligned as spreads if the browser
window isn’t wide enough. This would affect anyone with a display set
to less than around 1300 pixels (at a rough estimate), and it really
makes the page feel a bit of a mess!

If you’re constructing this using any kind of in-flow technique or
hand-rolled tables and cells, I recommend that you rebuild it in a
more robust way. And try making it not need a browser window resize!

Okay, I have to admit that I’m probably more guilty than most of
using browser window resize tricks. But I only use them for my
interactive panorama image content. In this niche market, that’s very
common indeed. And I do try to stick to doing this with new window
links rather than the window the user’s currently browsing with.

Your page is 3.62 MB in size. Unless you have a really really fat
pipe to your computer, it is going to take an appreciable amount of
time for this page to load, and some browsers may even time out
before finishing the job.

I recommend that you split your portfolio into multiple pages, also
turn on the Show File Sizes option in the Site pane in Freeway –
that can alert you to this sort of madness before you upload.

Also, personal gripe here: Don’t Mess With My Window! Please! Take
off the Action which makes the window go full-screen and uninstall it
from your computer while you’re at it.

Heh. You’re definitely in Heather’s corner on this, aren’t you?

I agree, mostly. But there are a few good reasons for using that.
Very, VERY few of course, but a number slightly greater than zero.

See http://www.panoramapostcards.co.uk/ for my example. Don’t worry,
it won’t change your current window dimensions - only the ones opened
from the ‘postcard’ thumbnails.

LOL

Actually, I doubt we haters of the window resizing are in a minority.
I see warnings and mutterings about exactly this “feature” on numerous
design blogs.

As long as it loads completely for everybody, my concern that it was hanging…

I was trying to create “shock and awe” by the sheer number of samples on both pages, then I figured the people looking at it will be industry people with larger monitors so I would save them a step by resizing the window for them. It will only be emailed to potential freelance clients.

Given that, is the consensus that I should still break it up, maybe go 2 columns by three pages and lose the auto resize? Will I still get a dramatic effect?

There are actually 2 pages/versions:

You can always use navigation to show the sheer scope of your work:

< 1 - 20 :: 21 - 40 of 100 :: 41 - 60 >

Another approach would be to categorize your work – this actually
makes a lot of sense for a busy industry professional who might be
looking for something specific, and take your wide scope of work as
off-putting rather than impressive. Remember, if you put the work
into organizing your information, the visitor won’t have to work as
hard.

Yet another advantage to categorization: you get to watch your stats
and see what’s popular, then do more of “that”.

You did that, Gregg. Both pages took so long to load that I gave up on
both of them …

Are you on dial-up or something? Just kidding…

10-4.

Ill put some time into organizing and categorizing and creating more pages. In the mean time Ill cut the number of samples on each page in half so they load a little faster, and lose the resize script.

Thanks again for the feedback.

You didn’t quote anything so I’m not sure who you’re replying to (I
get this by email) but, assuming it’s me, I’m on Broadband, about a
2mb line. Not the fastest by any means, but pretty damn quick as a
rule. The first page stalled on 4 out of 180-something items, and I
went to the second page which didn’t stall but was so slow (all
graphics, as far as I could see) that I left after about half of it
had come down.

best wishes,

Agreed - if there is too much on the page/taking too long to load then most folk will just bail out and that will reflect badly on you.
