Phishing ?

Hi chaps, a client has received this email:

I am offering a one way link service to your website and I can add a one way links from 70+ of my websites to yours. This is a powerful way of getting higher rankings in Google. Inbound links are important as a primary means of web optimisation as Google uses the number of back links as an indication of the popularity or importance of your website.

He is asking a very modest sum (£40) … my client is quite keen because I’ve been suggesting that links are a good idea.

Is this, though, just a scam ?

Many thanks for anyone that can help.

Roger

I would run away as fast as my magic mouse would carry me.

It sounds like the fellow in question is running some link farms and preying upon those website owners who don’t know better.

Incoming links can provide good juice to a website, but they can also provide bad juice if Google thinks that the website with the links is a link farm, which sounds like to case to me, in which case it would actually be detrimental to the website’s ranking.

Sincerely,

Cleverly priced to seem appealing without being a big risk - what the H, it is only £40 - lets go for it!
