Phone Numbers & Spam

Are phone numbers in web pages susceptible to automated harvesting by
solicitors/spammers like emails or are they safe?

Well, any text in HTML is technically harvestable, and any regularly formatted text is ripe for picking. But you have to ask what someone would do with this info. It’s not like they can’t get your number from the phone company.

Yeah, that’s true but then I also get a fair amount of telemarketers calling an unlisted phone number so it doesn’t seem a stretch that someone out there may want to hijack online numbers to sell or use for who-knows-what-purpose. In any case I was just wondering if anyone had heard of such a thing. As soon as someone finds a reason to start…

In the UK you can subscribe to the Telephone Preference Service ( and fax too ) and then it is technically an offence to cold call you if you are on the list ( you can then report them )
they are only really allowed to call you if you have previously done business with them

I subscribed four years ago and have been pestered very little since then, seems to work, I no longer get to work to find yards of faxes selling me car leasing and water coolers etc. and I haven’t been cold sold double glazing for ages (-:

I used to tell any cold callers that my brother worked for whoever was their main rival and then they never called back !

Do you not have anything similar in your part of the world Todd ?

it is actually the only thing on my list I haven’t complained about re: goverment legislation for a while

BUT it is still a big list !

Yeah, actually the Do Not Call lists here seem to work, mostly. We still get some calls from some who claim to have a “relationship” but overall the junk calls are way down for us since we signed up.
