Believe it or not, I am done with my site (you all deserve a beer on the house).
I have two questions about beta testing it.
I currently have a web hositng service, but for severl reasons I do not want to go to them to post my new site.
Is there some place I can go to temporarily host the site to see how it works?
The other issue is that I have the same domain name on my real site and this new site. I don’t want the beta site to show publicly (except to those to whom I give the url) until I am done testing and ready to make the hard cut-over from the old site. How can I do that? I know you cannot have the same domain being used by two different servers.

Any web host company would be happy to sort out a new domain and web
hosting for you. That’s about it though, there’s no short-term play
space available for people to do this sort of thing.

Web pages are gnenerally completely transportable, provided you don’t
use any special domain-specific scripting. Just sort out a new domain
if you really want and upload the site to that space. When you’re
ready to go live just change the upload details in the Freeway
document so you upload to the original place instead.
But you can simply upload into a folder in the first domain. As long
as you don’t post a link into that space anywhere that Google etc.
can find it, it’ll remain as secret as a secret thing. And yet you
can still check it by including the folder name when you type the URL
into a browswer.

Why not publish it to a folder called ‘test’, then if you go to yourdomain.com/test/ the site will load while everyone else still ends
up at your index.html page unless you give them the test URL.

Then publishing it to a folder called ‘test’ will keep your old site
intact and allow you and others to see the new site if they go to yourdomain.com/test/ unless the original site has a folder called test
in it’s structure, you should then call the folder something else.
As I may not have explained well earlier, I cannot use my current hosting site to upload a test folder. Long story…
I guess I will just contact whatever ISP will be hosting my new site and work with them on how to post this as a test site until I am ready to transfer over the domain name and cut off the old site.

You will need to use a new, different domain if you want to have
something working at the same time as your old site. You’ll also need
to talk to your new hosting company (not necessarily an ISP) about
how to transfer your existing domain.

Hopefully you didn’t register your domain name

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what I did (and my renewal is due in 30
days). Who would be a good entity to register my domain with, and how
do I go about changing?
the test folder on the existing site is a good suggestion. Most
cpanel installations have a feature that allows you to password
protect a directory so you could add that extra layer between the
test site and the public site

use the ip address (provided by the new host) to access the test site
