Pre-launch Announcement: Early Contributors

The community site project I’ve been working on for the past several months will launch in June.

For those that don’t already know the intention is to create a repository of varied topics related to art, photography, design, general coding and software development etc. Anything from a book review about photography techniques to how to operate a successful freelance business and everything in-between. Get the idea?

Since it’s a community supported project it would be nice if it launched with, you know, actual content. That’s why I’m posting this so early, to give people time to put something together. I’m looking for early-contributors: artists or designers (any flavor; any media), coders (any language; front- or back-end), photographers, directors, business owners etc., to write tutorials, reviews and (non-technical) articles.

In the past several months I’ve seen posts from FW users complaining about the lack of tutorials aimed at new and/or inexperienced users. With the obvious exception of the excellent video tuts from Thomas Kimmich there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of a centralized source for tutorials. Well, here’s your chance. I’ve built a solid infrastructure for you to build upon.

Besides Freeway-related stuff I would like to see a variety of topics from any of the following professions in any of 3 main categories: Articles, Reviews, Tutorials:

  • Professional photographers (I know there are several on FWT)
  • Web designers
  • Graphic designers
  • Front- and back-end coders
  • Software devs

Contact me off-list if you want to be an early contributor (or have questions).

Key Features (as requested from feedback):

  • Ability to create/edit/delete your own articles and also delete your entire account.
  • Rich Text Editor with a great customized file manager.
  • Full control over important SEO-related fields (meta tag, long title, page title etc.) so you can tailor these fields to each specific article.
  • Optional and comprehensive Public profile so you can promote your skills, experience and social connections.
  • Tutorials contain a section where members can specify useful info like: Experience Level, Completion Time, Required Skills, Required Tools, Additional Details.
  • Each member gets their own media folder where they have full control to upload, organize, edit, create and delete any files used in your articles. No one else has access to it, it’s all yours.
  • Attach demo/example .zip files to your article.
  • Security. All files uploaded to your personal media folder will be scanned for malicious code before being made publicly available.
  • Internal messaging. Receive (and delete) notifications from site admins regarding maintenance or other site-related news.
  • Syntax highlighting.

… and a few more things.

Planned Features (still in development)

  • Community calendar. Announce seminars, meet-ups, classes etc.
  • And of course any future feature requests.

Thanks.

I have. And still am.

To my surprise the vast majority of the work has involved security and permissions issues. This is very much an “Iceberg” project: not much to see up top, but a whole lot going on underneath.
