[Pro] 301 redirect

Hi all,

I have seen a few threads relating to this, but they are quite old, so I will start a new one.

Our client has asked to point all traffic from one particular site we have done for him to another site instead (an ecommerce site which he also owns and we put together). Both sites are pretty well indexed by google.

301 redirect is the way to go I know, but I am struggling with what appears to be something very simple. I have discovered the redirect for moving an entire site:

redirect 301 / http://www.newsite.co.uk/

and that works for the homepage, but I still have a few pages hanging around on google which just throw up a 404 error when clicked, which I assume is because that page (ie oldsite.co.uk/shoes.html) needs to exist on the new website for the redirection to work, but that page isn’t on the other site.

So, I have tried redirecting individual pages, too:

redirect 301 /page1.html http://www.newsite/folder/index.php

and that works for page1.html, bringing up newsite.co.uk/index.php. However, if I try and put the two together in the same htacces file (as below), I get a server
Internal Server error [500]

redirect 301 / http://www.newsite.co.uk/
redirect 301 /page1.html http://www.newsite/folder/index.php

I have seen some examples where multiple types of redirect have been shown, but I can’t get this to work.

Thanks in advance of any help.

Jonathan

How about adding more redirects to your htaccess files if that’s possible.

If you added:

ErrorDocument 401 http://www.newsite.co.uk/
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.newsite.co.uk/
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.newsite.co.uk/
ErrorDocument 500 http://www.newsite.co.uk/

this may well capture and redirect the other errors you were getting.

Hope this helps

Hi all

I thought I may as well resurrect an old thread.

I have noticed a few errors in google for:
http://www.mysite.co.uk/index.html

My homepage is index.php

Is it safe to just put the following in my htaccess code?

Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.mysite.co.uk/index.php

Thanks in advance.
