[Pro] Adding "skin"/controller to video

Simple question…

How do I add a controller at the bottom inside the lightbox?

http://medres.de/history.html
Press the bottom picture with the waterdrop to activate the video…

(the page is just a prelaunch)

First of all, you have to be using a version of Lightbox that will work with video files. This particular example is using a Flash video. The button is a link to the video file same as a thumbnail of the video would be. The version of lightbox they appear to be using is lightwindow.js which in turn is used in conjunction with Prototype/Scriptaculous. Because the javascript is doing all the heavy lifting of playing the video file when link is clicked you don’t really need to worry about that.

If you add a controller to your Flash video player (using Flash), then that will show when you press the thumbnail in the lightbox. But because of how Flash works internally, it’s hit or miss (mostly miss) to try to play/pause a swf file from outside the Flash file itself. You can reload it and cause it to auto-play again from the beginning, but that’s about it. Try QuickTime instead, that gets you a controller for the asking, and very high percentage availability due to the Trojan horse that is the iPod.

I have QuickTime, but not Pro. Can I still do the same thing?
Not on my regular computer now so I will try when Im at my desk again…

That depends on what format you have the original video in. QTP is a
very good use for $29, in my opinion, as it is a veritable Swiss Army
knife of multimedia. Once you have it, you will be able to do a sort
of “save for web” from your original video, and there are easy preset
export options or more involved manual tweaking if you like. From
there, it’s just a matter of linking to the file. Lightwindow sets a
controller by default, as long as you reserve space for it in your
dimensions.

Hi

So I have QT7 and can save the file in all kinds of formats, but I cant save it as a flash movie?!
I feel like a retard, when I can’t make this work?! I tried adding the QT movie with Grafic Link to file, but it wont work.

So, is it possible to pretend that I have done nothing and I could get a small “tut” on how to create what I want? I do know that this question have been answered so many times here, but when I search and do what the answers tell me all I get is what you see…

QuickTime is not Flash. Flash can save Flash. Even if you save as FLV
using Flash, you will then have to “wrap” that FLV with a SWF
controller. QuickTime Pro can read flash, and convert it to other
formats, though.

QuickTime is container and controls and content in one neat wrapper.
Try saving your file using the Export for Web feature in QuickTime
Player.

That should net you a small collection of files: a JPEG of the poster
frame, which you can use as your lightbox thumbnail, an mov file named
your_movie_name.mov, which will be a sort of “switching station”
between the one or more m4v and mov files that were also created
depending on the options you chose in the Export panel. Finally, there
will be a ReadMe.html, which is a set of instructions for adding the
movie to your site (and an example, too) which are suitable for any
sort of hand-coding environment. In Freeway, you won’t need those so
much. But you can use that page (in a browser) to confirm that the
movie looks and works the way you would expect.

The way this system works is that you upload all of the files, but
link only to the one your_movie_name.mov file (which is not the
literal name of the file, but rather an indication of how it will be
structured). That file (which is really just a cleverly formatted text
file) contains instructions to the QuickTime plug-in in the visitor’s
browser, and a negotiation will take place between the visitor’s
browser and plug-in and your server so that the best quality movie
will be chosen from all the alternatives.

If you only want to show one quality version of the movie, or want to
allow visitors to choose one or another manually, you can simply link
directly to one or another of the format files. (Probably named
your_movie_name-iPhone.m4v or similar.)
