[Pro] Background Images?

I’d like to use a background image for a new website I’m working on. I know it’s preferable to use a small vertical slice and have it repeat, but what if I want a non-repetating image?

For this type of application, what image type and size is best to use? Is there anything else I need to know about doing this?

Thanks!

what image type and size is best to use?

Really depends on the content of your image.

If it is flat colours then quite often Gif but if it is a photographic image then jpeg. PNG if you want transparency but usually you do not need transparency on a bg image.

Preview will usually do a pretty good job of reducing the image size for you. If you choose Save As then there is an option for File Type to output plus a quality slider to adjust the compression. It also tells you at the bottom how big the resulting file will be.

Remember that a bg image (by its nature) does not need to be great quality so you can ramp up the compression. You will still have the original if you muck it up.

Depending on the physical dimensions of the pic you should be able to get a good quality/size bg image (1280 x 1024) down to circa 100Kb (or less). Make sure it is 72ppi.
