I am doing a fairly basic website and was wondering what is the best format to use for photos jpg, tif png etc. I’d like my images to be as sharp as possible.

Quality will depend on the sharpness applied in whatever program you are using; photoshop, etc… , quality setting when exporting out, file size. I would also suggest (depending on your subject matter) add a little boost to your contrast.
jpg’s can be run through JPEGmini lite to reduce file size a bit.
Though Freeway can import images it is best if you can, perhaps at last stage import images at the required size as pass through.

If you are looking for best quality images.
But if you are building a standard site then FW’s image handling is perfectly good.
