[Pro] Best way to explain web tech?

I got into an interesting conversation with a new client today. I was trying to explain, in layman’s terms, what an ISP is. Normally, this would have been pretty easy, but my client is from another country so there was a bit of a language barrier and I wasn’t sure of if he understood every word I used.

Are there any simple sites I can send him to that explain the basic structure of websites and how they work? For example, what’s a website, what’s a domain, what’s an ISP, what’s a search engine, and how do each of these work together?

About.com might be a place to look, although their advice often veers off into the wrong from time to time. For a simple set of questions like this, they might have some simple answers. I suspect that some good metaphors might help you explain this yourself, too.

ISP is very similar to a storage rental company mixed with a billboard company.

DNS is a phone book.

Web site is a collection of Web pages available at the same root address, often, but not always, hosted by the same author or owner. (Not sure that’s very helpful, but the question begs the question – have you ever been at a Web site before?)

Domain is like a corporation name – unique in the world, referring to a specific company or organization.

Search Engine ideally is a complete index to all the content of the Web, which you can search through using keywords and such. But in reality, they barely scratch the surface of what all is out there. If you believe the hype, they are also primitive artificial intelligences, for certain definitions of that overheated term.

Great metaphors Walter. What do you think of this? Not the best actor, but it might work.

This is really good. I would drop the music in the mix quite a ways, and tape her hands to her sides, but the content is really great.
