[Pro] Blogger action nightmare

this is not meant to look like this, designed the page as per video, copied and paste code into blogger and it just looks like crap.
Anybody know why this action just doesn’t work ???

Really had enough…

Did you upload your template document as directed in the instructions for the Action? You have to have done several things: set the real, public URL for the template in the Document Setup dialog, upload the template to that actual URL on a public Web server, never ever take that template down from public view, paste the template code generated by the Action into the Blogger interface. From the looks of things, the only one you did here is the last.

Thanks Caleb I will give it a read and try again.

I will upload template to a test folder on the URL on the server (it’s on go daddy, I assume their server is public), and try to copy and paste the code again into blogger.

when I upload the site to go live i.e. not in the test folder, should I repeat the copy and paste of the code generated by the action into the blogger interface ?

Sorry to sound so dim, it is a bit confusing.

If the blog is not on the site but on google blogger how do you link to it from the website, I am guessing you make the blog button on the site link externally to the blog address on blogger ?

cheers, Neil

This might be your problem right here. Go to “File > Document Setup” in the top bar while you are in Freeway, and in the upload tab ensure that URL field includes the test directory (eg: domain.com/test/ instead of domain.com if the folder is named test). This would explain most - if not all - of the issues.

Yes. You will need to change the URL field that I mentioned above to just domain.com, upload the website, then copy the code over to blogger.

Hi Caleb,

done all that, followed your blog, put the blog page in a separate folder, did the RPL action and it is still not working, the header is at the bottom, none of the link buttons are there just the titles in wrong colours, wrong font, and only one of the jpeg images.

I also got the folder in the wrong place on go daddy so now the site is live, oops ! Not having a good day…

When you click on the link on the website for the blog I get this http://www.flexipop.com/blog.html

the blogger template on blogger is looking like this https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4089373711110895166#templatehtml

Not what it looks like when I preview it in the browser in Freeway

feel like giving up…

The Link on your website has to go to the blog page on the blogger server or alternatively display the blog page using an iFrame in your FW page.

the blogger template on blogger is looking like this

We cant see that as only you as the account holder can!

I can only assume that as you are not having success it is because you haven’t completely followed Caleb’s instructions.

Read through the workflow again and ensure that you have done it all - if necessary start from scratch.

If there is a point that you are not sure of then ask.

This is a difficult one for us to check without access to your Blogger account.

Thanks David, will start from scratch and make a fresh start with it.

I’m sure I will have questions, mostly stupid ones I’m afraid…

…done all that, followed your blog, put the blog page in a separate folder…

Let me clarify what I meant:

I was assuming that you had uploaded the website to a testing folder on your server. If the URL field in the document setup doesn’t reflect that, than it is natural that Blogger can’t find the resources it needs.

For example, if you uploaded the website to a folder on server named dev, then the resources that Blogger needs to display your website correctly will be at domain.com/dev/Resources/filename. However, if the URL in the document setup is just domain.com, then Blogger will be looking at domain.com/Resources/filename. Obviously, the resources are not there, and the layout becomes discombobulated.

Hence, the URL in the document setup pane must reflect where you are uploading the entire website. To continue to use the example of using a folder named dev, the URL needs to be set to domain.com/dev/, not just domain.com.

Like David said, unless we have access to your blog as an admin, the freeway file, and your server, it’s hard to diagnose everything.

Once you get the hang of using the Blogger actions, is amazing what you can do. However, there is a learning curve!

It looks like your page is looking for the Resources at

http://www.flexipop.com/flexipop_test/Blog/Resources

when it should be

http://www.flexipop.com/Blog/Resources

Somas Caleb has suggested look at the URL in the document setup pane and change it to blog

Thanks Caleb, I think I’m way down the bottom of that curve, but I am climbing it.

I think I have the upload address in the document upload, but didn’t add the /blog/to that address. The blog template is in a folder called blog as you suggested, so I assume I must now add that to the rest of the address. Do I also put /blog/ in the directory window of the document upload ?

I am going to have another go at it this week, I’ll keep you posted of my progress

Thanks for all your help, I’ll get there in the end.

Cheers,
Neil

Actually, it should just be http://www.flexipop.com. Change that, upload, then copy the code back to Blogger.

Also, I wouldn’t put the blog template in a folder. Just place it at the top level.

Do I also put /blog/ in the directory window of the document upload ?

No.

That depends on whether you are creating the Blogger Template page as part of the main site or as a separate FW doc.

There are advantages to making it a separate FW doc and uploading only that page into a sub folder.

One being that no matter what you do to the main FW doc the blog page will not be affected/deleted/changed.

OK, tried it in a folder, out of a folder, changed the upload name each time to reflect that, but to no avail, still looks nothing like the template as it appears in FW. Only one graphic element is visible and nowhere near where it should be on the page.

I still have the RPL action on the blog template page, shall I remove it ? not that I think it will make any difference, it made no difference when I added it in the first place.

I think I am going to give up and just use bloggers boring templates instead, or start from scratch again tomorrow…

Neil,

If you want, contact me via the form here: http://www.onrampwebdesign.com/contact.html and we will see if you can add me as an admin to your blog and send me a copy of the Freeway file. We will get this straightened out.

Neil,

Actually, this will be easier (I think):

  1. In the URL field of the document setup, remove the /blog/.
  2. Reupload the site.
  3. Copy the code to Blogger.

Just three steps. Follow them and it should work.

Caleb, genius ! it very nearly worked, closest yet. Everything appeared in the blogger template when i pasted in the code.

Only problem now is the "About Me’ and ‘Blog Archive’ elements have not appeared on the right hand side of the template in blogger where I put them but have returned to the bottom of the page.

Perhaps the FW template I created is to wide for the blogger template and i just need to make the FW blog action boxes smaller or the page narrower.

And also some buttons for facebook, google etc have appeared that I didn’t have on my FW template.

Still some tweeking to do…

Any suggestions how to get rid of them and get the last 2 elements in the correct place ?

It worked, brilliant !

I re-did the layout of the elements on the FW page and it is all now there.

My only slight problem now are the social media buttons. They seem to be a fixture, I don’t mind that so much, but the google one will recommend the blog only with my name not Flexipop, and it seems the only way round that is to change my profile name on the account which would change the name on all google products.

Do you know anyway around that, can i remove that button or switch off, or hide the name ?

Thanks for all your help Caleb, and you David, love it when it works…

On the blog template in Freeway, in the menu bar navigate to “Page > HTML Markup”. In the resulting dialog, choose “Before ” in the dropdown. Paste this in there:

.post-share-buttons:last-child > div { display:none !important; }

Save, re-upload the site, and copy the template code over to blogger.

I must admit right now that I haven’t really tested this yet, but it should do the job.
