Having endeavoured to find every reference to the topic on this list over the last few days, I think the answer to my question “No” but I’d love to be wrong!
There are a couple of references to being able to “add a gadget” in Blogger’s “page element design” editing page, but the “add a gadget” menu only appears on one division at a time.
I have tried setting up several columns and setting a blogger action in each, but blogger simply chooses one of them seemingly at random as the one it will allow gadgets to be added to after upload.
I seem to have stumbled on at least two answers, one of which was the mark of a desperate person!
I used the following markup inside a division:
Obviously it was stolen from a “header” but it seems to work anywhere, I have no idea what it means or why, which puts me at something of a disadvantage when playing with this stuff.
Having had success there, I wrote these lines out of desperation, having tried every thing else I could think of, and after about eleventy thousand attempts at guessing it too seems to work:
Just remember you cannot have more than one thing on a page with the same ID. If you create a second section, be sure to call it it=“widgetbox2” or similar. Many different items can have the same class – that’s what class means and is for – but IDs have to stand alone on a page.

For me, only the depth varies - over the years it’s been a bit of a “character building” experience, not that I can blame Blogger for that, just my own lack of knowledge. Thankfully I’m not paying myself by the hour!
