[Pro] Blue Border Around Graphic Hyperlinks

Hi,
I am an artist rebuilding my website on Freeway Pro from a blank template. On my art homepage I have 9 graphic thumbnails and I’ve made each image into a 2 image stack rollover. The ‘normal’ image is as is, and the top ‘mouse over’ image has an outer glow and web safe color around the outside. Everything worked fine in the safari browser preview but when I made each image into a hyperlink I noticed a blue border that appeared around each image once it was clicked. I do not understand why this happened and I do not want it there. The color scheme is very specific. Any advice would be great. I have e-mailed the support system twice and not gotten a response.

Thanks,
Jessica L.

You might wanna try adding this to your CSS:

img
{
    border-style: none;
}

Thanks for the reply. I read all of the threads and tried what people suggested. Nothing worked for me. Please keep in mind that I know nothing about coding and very little about computer terms. So the code that you gave me above, what do you mean ‘adding this to your CSS’.

Can you post a link to your page online and we can better target an answer to your particular case.

what do you mean ‘adding this to your CSS’.

There are various ways that you can add some CSS code but one of the methods outlined in thread talks about creating a new tag style.

Extract:

To do this, make sure nothing is selected on the page, go to Edit>Styles, click on the “+” button in the bottom left corner, enter “area” (without the quotes) in the Tag field, click Extended, click New, enter “outline” (no quotes) for Name, enter “none” (no quotes again) for Value and click OK. Make sure that nothing is in the “Name” field of the Edit Styles dialog (if anything is in there, such as “style1”, remove it), then click OK again.

But show us your page and we can help more.

Ok. So in order for you to see my page it would have to be published right… and I would send you the URL?
So far I have been viewing it in the safari browser and the files are published to my desktop.

So in order for you to see my page it would have to be published right… and I would send you the URL?

And uploaded to a server.

By seeing the underlying code we can better target your problem - otherwise we are flying blind.

But try the suggested fix in my last post and see if that works for you.

I could not get your suggested fix to work. So I will be in touch when I get my site published and can send you the URL. I am not even sure how to do this, I am reading the manual…so it may be awhile.

Try this

Go to Page>Html Markup and select the Before (before end head) slot from the Insert picker at the top of the window.

Paste in the following

<style type="text/css">
area { outline: none;}
</style>

Let us know how it goes.

Just noticed that your first pic links to this page

http://www.jessicaliggero.com/Boobs,%20Balls%20%26%20Boxing/boobs,ballsboxin.html

Can I point out that you should follow a strict naming convention when naming files and or folders.

And that convention is that

1 - you should not use space characters in your file/folder names. FW converts these to %20

2 - You should stick to alphanumerics ie a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and - (hyphens) and _ (underscores). Do not use (under any circimstances) other punctuation characters such as commas etc.

You will see in that link that you have used both spaces (%20) and commas (,) - these characters are not web safe and can trip up many Browsers/Operating systems.

ok. I appreciate any feed back on how to improve the site. I have no experience with all of this. I changed the folder/file names as you suggested and published the changes.

  1. I notice that the page tab and top of the window bar (on safari) display the exact same name as the file in freeway.
    Ex. file name “boobs_balls_boxing_15” displays the same in the safari tab. I want it to read “Boobs Balls & Boxing” (no number) while the entire body of work is viewed. Is this possible? I notice that on some artists web sites the tab displays the artist name the entire time while the address bar changes with each click.

  2. Also does this naming convention (no spaces etc.) apply to JPEG image titles that are imported to FW?

1 - If you look in the Inspector with nothing selected in the page you will see a box for Title and another for File.

In the Title box you can have any punctuation/characters you want but in the File box you must follow the correct naming convention.

As a default FW will truncate anything you put in the Title box to fit the File box - unless you change it!

2 - Yes you should follow the same convention for ALL files used throughout your site.

I see that changing the title in the title box of the inspector also changes the page title in the site panel on the left. I like to have my pages (for the individual bodies of work) in the site panel ordered numerically to make hyperlinking easier. But I don’t like having a number in the browser bar. So many little details now. And before I go changing everything…

  1. Is it ok to use special characters (dividers) in the title box
    “Jessica Liggero⎜Boobs, Balls & Boxing”

  2. My site has hundreds of JPEG images that I have dragged and dropped into it. Most of them are not labeled correctly. If I change the names of the images in the media folder will FW automatically rewrite the names when I upload the site or will that mess up everything? What’s the best way to rename the JPEGS without screwing everything up?

Thanks.

If you have a lot of pages, you may want to start organizing them into folders, that can make the hyperlinking process a lot simpler. Whatever you place in the Title field is what will appear in the Title tag of the page (html) so unless those numbers mean something to your end-users (say if you are listing products by their model number), I would advise against adding them. It’s all about semantic content, you see.

The Title tag is one of the richest elements with respect to search engine optimization. The Title and the first H1 on the page should be related or very similar to one another, and if you go the extra mile when linking to your page, the Title attribute of the link to the page should be exactly the same as the Title tag of the page you are linking to:

my-excellent-page.html
  <title>My Excellent Page | My Fabulous Site</title>
  ...
  <h1>My Excellent Page</h1>
  ...

some-other-page.html
  <a href="my-excellent-page.html" title="My Excellent Page | My Fabulous Site">My Excellent Page</a>

That’s a very strong link, because the title tag matches from the anchor (a tag) to the page it links to, and the link text (contents of the a tag) is exactly the same as the H1. There is no confusion on the part of a human or a robot that these pages are related directly.

  1. Is it ok to use special characters (dividers) in the title box
    “Jessica Liggero⎜Boobs, Balls & Boxing”

Sure. This is common. Just make sure your page is set to publish as UTF-8 (Unicode) rather than any other character set.

Each image that you have drag-n-dropped can be manipulated individually by clicking on the image in Freeway and changing its name in the Inspector. The name of the original file is almost meaningless in this context. It would only matter if you had imported the files as pass-through. Drag-n-drop is another beast entirely.

Thanks for your input, however I am not sure if I completely understand. I am new to this. I am an artist and built a site for viewing my work. Most of my hyperlinks are internal and connect to each other to see a body of work. None of my pages are long so why would I need an anchor? What is H1? How do you alter internal hyperlinks? In the “Edit Hyperlink” Box and then click on “extended”?

Where can I change that setting? I went to “Document Set-up” and could not find anything about UTF-8 (Unicode)?

Anchor is the proper name of the <a href="something">Something</a> tag. When you link to a part of the page using its ID, and the URL contains only the ID of that element, you may hear that referred to as an “anchor”. But really, the a in a link comes from the fact that the tag itself is named anchor, and whether the URL within its href attribute contains a #some_id segment or not, it’s still an anchor tag.

What is H1?

There are 6 different header tags, with the code being <h1>Text</h1> through <h6>Text</h6>. You can create these using the Styles palette in Freeway. There are (by default) tags defined for h1, h2, and h3, but you can create the other three as well. Headers are used to identify content areas within the page, and to give them a hierarchy. Think of them as the outline of your text content.

How do you alter internal hyperlinks? In the “Edit Hyperlink” Box and then click on “extended”?

If you highlight the text and press Apple-K to open the Edit hyperlink dialog, you can use the interface to add a title to your link. You don’t need Extended for this.

Each page has its own output tab in the Page Inspector, and you set this property there. By default, Freeway will be set to Automatic, which usually means Unicode, but it is also possible for a page to be set to a different output mode.
