[Pro] breakpoints question

I am a newbie to FW7 / responsive.

Is it possible in FW7 to set breakpoints like on www.nicolewitthoefft.com? If yes, how?

How can I explain properly?

The width of the browser window seem not to be = the (FW) pages widths itself.

→ 980 / 768 / 480 / 300

Let me explain. When I reduce my browser window to ca. 970 and less the centred page skips to 670 px width stays when I reduce further. = Tablets.

When I reduce my browser window to 750 px and less the centred page skips to 300 px width and stays in mobile width when I reduce further. = Mobile.

Very elegant.

But in FW I just have the classic breakpoints which skip when the browser window reaches the breakpoint = page width.

I cannot find an option to set extra „screen breakpoints“… in addition to page sizes = ordinary page breakpoints.

Did I miss something? Any Ideas?

Many thanks!

You mean Edit Media Types?

And for the RTFM part: http://download2.softpress.com/docs/introduction_to_responsive_design.pdf

It’s pretty straightforward …

Your example site seems to only have 3 sizes

Up to 750px, 751-970 and larger than 970

Not sure that I agree with those breakpoints but it does make for easier construction.

You can change them easily. Edit / Media Types from the main menu. They’re just suggestions.

Thanks a lot. Meantime I made some tests and trials. And yes I am reading the extended reference for FW7.
And had a good chat with my “good old friend” Thomas Kimmich too.

I am not sure, if I can explain it properly in English, it is even in German very complex.
It depends obviously in the design, whether it is a responsive layout with inflow items or with non-inflow items (absolute).

Only in the second I can achieve it like on the yoga site, because settings of page-width and breakpoints are separated.

(Hugh disadvantages: I cannot control the text overflow and I must edit every media width tab.)

But maybe I am wrong and first I must learn & try more

But: Are the default breaking points in FW very reliable and really common?

Thanks a lot again!

Now what to write here (if not to write the wrong things)?

“Breakpoint” doesn’t necessarily mean “Page-Width”, it simply tells the browser:

“Hey - attention, there is something going to happen!”

In this case: At breakpoint 970px (browser-window width) please reduce page-width (Freeway) to 670px and at breakpoint 750px do 300px.

If this is making sense?

There is only one thing to note making responsive pages:

It’s the try to display our pages on all devices the best we can.

It is designer’s decision to arrange and re-arrange items or not. How you do it or at what “point” you do it is simply not the question - it’s a question of:

Does the page, loaded on a specific device, comes up to your expectation or not?

All the page example does, is trying to live on the safe side of life which will mean, that the breakpoints are not following the current (obvious) device-widths (heights).

This page loads on iPad landscape the same as desktop, has a breakpoint at 970 to re-arrange the page in portrait slightly. Sure - it could be done by 768px as well but what happens, if the device-manufacturer today decide, the the new Pad-rule is 1068x799 (for whatever reason)?

ALL breakpoints need to be re-adjusted?

Cheers

Thomas
