I’ve only used Perch the once and I’m sad to say probably never again, too many headaches trying to figure out what to do, re. poor documentation** etc… I did find myself going way off piste and comfort zone from FW and for that particular website now view and tweak entirely in a text editor. And it must be said learn’t quite a bit through doing so.

I know what you mean. The learning curve can be surprisingly steep for what is marketed as a lightweight CMS. A basic understanding of PHP would not be out of place. In some ways I find Perch more cryptic to use than MODX despite the disparity between their target market. I’m not sure if that says more about MODX or Perch.
