[Pro] Carousel 2 Alternatives

I’vebeen working on rebuilding a site in Freeway 7 only to find that the Carousel 2 action is not responsive and requires fixed dimension elements. Thats a pity.
Just wondered if there are other ways to achieve the same control/effect whilst having resizable responsive elements. I had used Carousel 2 with text block for a sort of ticker tape effect.
Any other actions or options?

Any insights as ever most welcome.

Apart from the obvious WOW Slider, Hype etc. for a simple text effect you could use

http://www.deltadesign.co/FW7Test/scriptyfader-responsive.html

What content do you want to use in yours?

Hello David,

Thanks for your response.

I haven’t used scriptyfader for a while.
Tried it out there but the scriptyfader options don’t respond or wrap to the changed media size.

I had used the carousel 2 action for graphics and text so I was looking to achieve the same with the added responsiveness required.

I may look again at wow slider if there is no other freeway way!

Cheers again

Making it responsive is not about changing the SF settings - its about page construction.

It may not work with the content that you want to use but if you create separate panes on a FW page and upload so that we can see what your intent is I am sure guidance will be forthcoming.

So make a page as if you were displaying your Carousel Panes as individual items and provide a URL

Hello again David,

I shall upload as soon as I can. Now that I have access to the file again I shall check my construction and see if there is anything I may have missed.

Cheers

Hello again David,

I have setup a simple sample of what I am trying to achieve here:
http://www.adevlinvisual.com/test/light/index.html

What I would like to be able to achieve is that the carousel panels would be responsive at the different media sizes. The way I have set this up then I have the carousel with fixed width and height as any other options causes the carousel not to function.

Is there a way to construct this so that the height and width can be more flexible?

Any inputs would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Anthony

So is it just text that you want in the ‘Carousel’ - I use the term loosely as Carousel is not responsive.

Hello again David,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have used Carousel 2 quite a lot on projects for graphics and text during earlier versions of Freeway with fixed width sites i.e. not responsive. It worked well enough for those purposes.
I guess if there is no way for the content or the container to be responsive using Carousel 2 then I shall have to find another way of achieving the same effect but in a responsive manner.

It does somewhat limit its usefulness which is a pity as it was a very useful tool.

I shall have a look around at the other options in the meanwhile.

All the best for now

Not possible.

The reason I ask about the content you want to use is so that we can offer an alternative.

I tried this: Google…

https://www.google.com/search?rls=en&q=responsive+carousel&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

This turns up several I think very promising ideas on the first page. Unless the search terms must be

responsive + carousel + only for Freeway

then follows much disappointment.

So the best answer I think is to consider how such things are done and then if you need, how to work that back into Freeway.

Carousels in general use a combination of javascript and css styles. The scripts and styles for Freeway’s Carousel just don’t allow for any flexibility. So I took those google results and randomly picked one and implemented it.

http://cssway.thebigerns.com/workbench/marquee-carousel/

And you can see the OWL Carousel acting responsively. Took a little poking and prodding, but it works as advertised, has plenty of options. The biggest drawback is how it fails when javascript is disabled, so I probably wouldn’t use it provided I could be persuaded to put that type of content in my page in the first place.

I also added the Marquee element as a simpler alternative-- and to make a bunch of other points that I think that I will forgo as I now realize where I am posting this and just how done I am preaching to this audience. I’m sure that people will get the idea without my needing to explain it all just fine.

Good work on that example Ernie.

Here’s a simple (mainly CSS) carousel slider that I posted about a year ago and was based on a fixed width example;
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/795566/kirupa/responsive-content-slider.html https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/795566/kirupa/responsive-content-slider.html

The code should be easy enough to figure out what is going on although I must admit I’ve not tried rebuilding it in Freeway.
Regards,
Tim.

Hello Ernie,
Many thanks yet again.

I take your point about googling for solutions but I guess I was just checking with the community of experts here as to any options or work rounds or whatever within Freeway itself before I searched for an external script. Now that seems to be the way forward. I’ve had a look at a few options and the Owl one seems feasible.

I really appreciate your outline regarding the Marquee element. I guess it may be jettisoned like many other scripts and actions and ways of working as website development evolves further.

I guess I was just wondering really what everyone else uses in such circumstances where they want a responsive carousel.

You have given me a direction of travel on this and I do thank you for your unselfish help and support.

Tim, thanks for that link.
I’ve had a look at this also and can see this as being another viable option. I shall see how I get on with that but I reckon it could be a fresh challenge to build it in Freeway. If I can then it will be very useful.

Hopefully another bit of the learning curve to ascend here.

All the very best for now

Anthony

I have Hype and really like how it works. Has anyone used it and embedded a Hype responsive project into Freeway? How did it turn out?

You need the http:// part to make these fully qualified URLs. Either that, or you need to leave the URLs at the “relative” state, so if the file really is in your root folder along with the index.html for your site, then the URL would be /jquery.min.js. Unless I’m mis-reading this, and you really do have a folder in your server’s root named plumbershudsonvalley.com – do you?
