[Pro] Carousel and timeout problems?

For some reason I am continuing to have problems with Carousel Timeout Errors when publishing and/or uploading my websites.

Quite frankly this is driving me batty. Walter has been very graciously helping me offline to try to root out the problem, but I am completely clueless. At first, I thought it had something to do with my use of the RPL, but that wasn’t the case. I then tried downloading and installing previous versions of the Carousel action, but that was fruitless as well. Up until a few weeks ago, Freeway Pro and the Carousel Action were rock solid.

I did reformat my Mac hard drive a few weeks ago and I installed some additional memory—which tested okay TechTool Pro 6. But nothing seems to fix these ongoing Timeout Errors, which randomly occur. I am able to publish and upload my websites after clearing the errors and republishing, but doing that is very frustrating, and time-consuming.

I’m hoping the FreewayTalk community can help me figure out what the heck is going on—especially those users who may have had similar problems. Thanks for your help.

Click on one of your instances of each of these Actions, and press the Clear Error button. Publish again. I’ve seen this, others have reported it. In my experience, it’s not strictly related to the Action. It’s just that the Action happens to be the thing that’s active when Freeway decides that publishing is taking too long, and it gets the blame.

In all cases that I’ve seen, pressing the button and continuing the publish clears it up forever (or at least until it happens again.

Unfortunately, I keep having to clear the errors, which often times is not just a single button on one page, but multiple buttons scattered throughout the site.

Plus, it creates a confidence problem as well. Anytime I get any kind of an error message I wonder if things were published or uploaded properly.

If this is a known issue with Freeway Pro, why doesn’t softpress address it? My thoughts are if we can isolate the users who are having the problem, and look for any consistencies in the actions they’re using and/or their system configurations, perhaps we can determine the source
of this problem.

Let me ask you this. When you publish a website is everything that’s taking place in that operation done locally (not via the Internet or server)?

When you publish, the Action checks the network to see if it needs to link to the built-in copy of Prototype and Scriptaculous, or if it can use the Google CDN. The latter is best for performance, but it only works if you’re online. So if you’re offline completely, this can take a little while to time out to before deciding to use the internal, and I can see that it might cause the publish process to take too long and throw that warning.

So what would happen if my internet connection was degraded, either because of unusually high network traffic (i.e my kids playing online video games or watching Netflix)?

Could that possibly cause a timeout error?

BTW, I’m on Verizon FIOS, so my Internet speed should be fairly fast. :slight_smile:

I’m wondering if this issue is related to the Mac sleep function?

I can’t see how that could be related. The issue seems to be that if the page takes too long to publish (and this delay was traced to a corrupt image on one other client’s document) then the timeout is reported as being an Action problem and the Action is marked as bad. I can assure you that there’s nothing in these Actions that takes all that long to run. They are fairly low-drama, simply gathering up elements from your page and moving them around. The only thing that has a timeout is the lookup to see if the Mac is currently connected to the net, and the only time it can’t instantaneously determine that is if you have some sort of network stall, where you’re connected but not able to pass packets.

Hmmm. Well then I’m clueless about this. I worked on a website all day yesterday and never a problem publishing. Then, this morning we’re right back to square one, with me having to clear errors no less than 4 times. :frowning:

Walter, I think you’re right. Once I cleared all of the errors, Freeway Pro seems to be a lot more stable. Sometimes it does take a few clearing sessions though. This is probably because I use Carousel pretty extensively and FWP seems to catch the errors a page or two at a time.

Man, I wish I could figure out the root of this problem. :slight_smile:

As I dig into this a little further I suspect the issue is with my system, not Freeway Pro, nor Carousel.

I just tried turning off my Mac’s Ethernet port and publishing locally and everything worked fine. No error messages at all. I’ll need to investigate this a little further.

So what does it mean if I can successfully publish my FWP website locally, but once I connect to the Ethernet I get a rash of timeout errors? Could it be one of these?

  1. Bad Ethernet port

  2. Bad Ethernet cable

  3. Bad Ethernet Switch

  4. Bad Router

And if so, what’s the best way to troubleshoot this problem?

You may also have a bad route to the server where you are trying to upload, or a bad connection to Google, or a filter or proxy in between you and either of those. First, try to visit the Google CDN. What do you see at this link:

http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/prototype/1.7/prototype.js

If you instantly get a screen full of code, then that rules out your path to Google.

Also what version of Freeway Pro are you using, precisely? There are a couple of versions where there is an ugly break between the old AppleScript way of accessing shell scripts and the new method where it’s native to Freeway.

Do you have AppleScript for Actions enabled in your Freeway preferences?

Try this to see if there are any issues with your hosting:

http://speakeasy.net/speedtest

Be sure to try multiple endpoints when you’re testing, and see if there is any variation between them. If you’re not in the USA, then there is probably a similar bandwidth testing tool nearer to you. Google’s CDN is world-wide, so the issue will not be in your ability to reach the US, and in fact the issue could just be your last mile.

I went through some incredible problems a couple years ago with DSL, and every time it rained, my connection would start bouncing. It would be up for about 90 seconds, then down for a minute, then back up, ad nauseam. I ended up getting a T1 line, because nothing else was guaranteed uptime. I pay twice what the local cable would charge, five times what DSL used to cost, but it’s nice and boring, how I like it.

I got a screen full of code, so I guess that rules as this issue.

Using Freeway Pro 5.6.4 (6412)

Yes, Applescript in Action s is enabled

Here is the code that checks your connection:

var connected = function(){
	if(fwShellCommand){
		return fwShellCommand('ping -c1 -i1 http://ajax.googleapis.com');
	}else{
		var osa=new FWOSAInterpreter;
		osa.fwWrite('do shell script "curl ajax.googleapis.com"');
		osa.fwCompile();
		return osa.fwRun();
	}
}

Nothing sinister there, no idea why you would be able to hit the CDN direct to a file, but not ping the server hosting that file. Open up Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and paste in the following command:

ping -c1 -i1 http://ajax.googleapis.com

Tell us what you see when you press Return after that line.
