[Pro] Centreing items vertically in cell

I have graphic text items which I want to centre ‘vertically’ within cells. I don’t seem to be able to make Freeway do it :frowning:

Do I set the cell alignment to ‘middle’ in the inspector? This normally vertically centres any html text in a cell, but doesn’t seem to make a graphic behave likewise.

But then the graphic item has it’s own alignment attributes in the inspector. Do I set the alignment to Absolute Bottom?..Middle?..Center?..or one of the other 8 choices!

Whatever combinations of cell and item alignment I use I’m damned if I can make the graphic items centre vertically! What’s the trick?

It seems to work OK if you make sure you have a flashing cursor in the
table cell to the right of your image.

Not sure I’m with you; you said you couldn’t align an image
vertically, and I said that you can as long as you don’t have the
image selected, just click in the cell, then use the Inspector
vertical align icon. Was that not it?

OK, I don’t have the gif box selected and I have a flashing cursor after the gif box item…and I select the cell and centre Middle from the inspector…and then publish…

And the gif box is nowhere near centred vertically.

??

This problem recurs almost every time I get Freeway out - it’s particularly bad when you have text, gif text, and form items in a cell and you want to centre them all vertically. As far as I can tell, impossible!

Ah, sorry Hugh; I didn’t actually publish. Don’t know why that’s
happening …

If you’re trying to vertically center text + image in a table cell (or
an HTML box that has its “layer” checkbox un-checked, then the easiest
way to do that is to click once on the image, set its align to Middle.
Select all to get the entire paragraph of text + image, then look in
the inspector to see which text style(s) is/are applied to it. Try to
simplify the style to a single paragraph style, then modify that style
so it has 0 space before and 0 space after. Be sure that that is the
only style applied to your text when you’re done. Finally, set the
vertical alignment for the table cell – click once on the table cell
so it gets the fat gray selection rectangle around it, then set
vertical alignment to center.

Preview in a browser, it should align the way you like.

Nice tip that, Walter, thanks, I’ll certainly try that.

But in the current case there is only a gif box in the cell…no text formatting has previously or subsequently been applied to anything in the cell; there is only a gif box inserted from scratch. No text, no form items, just a gif box.

That shouldn’t need a special text style, should it?

Then what I said before should work — I tried it!

No matter how hard you try, everything in a table cell is wrapped in a
P. Try the trick, it might work.

I take my hat off, Walter, it does work. Well, there’s a pixel or two more below the gif than above it, to all intent and purpose that’s as good as I’ve seen!

Sorry, Paul, it doesn’t work here. It may be a conflict, I don’t know. There’s lots more going on on the page and a whole menu system which is styled by an external stylesheet which is throwing all sorts of stuff about (I’ve sent files to Softpress on that one). But Walter’s ‘force’ does work.

An excellent tip for the KB if it isn’t in there already.

thanks,

Hugh
