[Pro] Changing a site from freeway to other software?

Dear Community, Can anybody help, I have some clients that I have built sites for using freeway, I wish to stop dealing with these clients (amicably) but i don’t know how to hand over the control of their sites to another wed developer, most of contact I’ve had with other developers, Freeway has been sneered at and frowned upon, will they be able to work with what I have created or have to totally start the site from scratch causing my ex clients extra costs? Regards. Steve

If you want to transition to a developer who doesn’t use Freeway, you’re in luck! There’s absolutely nothing for you to do. Make a Zip of the Site Folder on your Mac, and send it to them with best wishes. If they are used to wading through HTML and CSS, they will be able to do the same in your Freeway-generated pages. After all, what comes out of the sausage machine is just valid HTML/CSS/JavaScript. Nothing proprietary or magic. All the magic is in the Freeway file itself, and you don’t have to give them your secret sauce if they don’t appreciate it.

Thanks Walter,

But what about just the opposite?

If someone want you to take over the site - made in other software… do we need to completely recreate?

If you want to use Freeway, then yes, you will need to do that. Freeway’s HTML import is barely usable in any case I have found. You are much better off re-creating it from screenshots and copy/paste (or drag) from a browser.

Hi julie,
Ultimately, yes. If you want to get the site up and running quickly FTP the existing files into the server space and start work on a few master pages in Freeway. When you’ve recreated these you can make new Freeway pages as you need to and drop them into the existing site. Your workflow won’t be as fluid as creating the whole site again from scratch (managing links manually for example) but it will allow you to migrate the site at your own pace.
Regards,
Tim.

If you wish. There is a well-documented method to rebuild an existing site from scratch.

If you feel reasonably comfortable with HTML and CSS, then there are plenty of editing programs available.

I’m currently forcing myself to learn some HTML and CSS without relying on Freeway (mainly to prove that I can if I need to) and I’m using Panic’s Coda. I get to see live-updating preview of my page as I work, and I get little bursts of quiet elation when something actually works the way I expect!

I don’t advocate editing the raw code if you’re not comfortable there, but it is an option if the client is only requiring simple edits to an existing site. If you expect more meaty changes down the line, then recreate in Freeway.

Cheers

Heather
