[Pro] CMS

Hi
I’ve searched WebYep, Pulse and Joomla sites, but I can’t confirm the answer. And I don’t want to assume.

The question is - can any or all of the above handle the situation where many (let’s say 100) ‘subscribers’ can log into one site, to edit ‘only’ their own page?

By editing, I mean changing some pictures and text, on a regular basis.

This is a new FW6 project, so which of the above, or other, might best suit my needs?

Thanks

Hi Paul
This is the answer to WeYep (although the others should be able to accomplish it as well).
The first question: will you know how many people will be logging in prior to creating the site?

If you do then it could be accomplished using WebYeps own multiple logins, although I have never done 100 unique logins, but it should be achievable.

If you don’t and you need the site to generate its own unique page for the user to edit, then you may need to use WebYep and Sitelok (an application that can be used with WebYep) together. That way access could be created on the fly… I would need to investigate a little further with Sitelok… just to make sure but I think it accomplish what you want.

If you could give me just a bit more info then I will come back to you.

As for Joomla and Pulse: I assume Joomla can and Pulse probably can… although people on this forum who use those CMS’s can confirm it.

Hi Max

i don’t know the answer to how many people will be logging in, but the site is aimed at Asian tourists coming to Australia, and also locals seeking Asian goods and services. I have registered URL’s for specific parts of Australia, and the first site is aimed at one of those areas. So the subscribers could be any business or service that deals with anything Asian - which could amount to a daunting number.

So a CMS that has the potential to grow as needed would be great, and yes the possibility to generate a unique page and login on the fly would be advantageous. An integrated payment system would also be good:-)

I envisage having perhaps 5 separate sites for different areas in Australia. I already have the URL’s and business names registered, but don’t want to give too much away on a forum as yet:-)

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

I use the solution from surreal cms (http://www.surrealcms.com) and like the easy implementation in FW because you need to add the appropriate tag only for the content you want to make editable. The CMS itself provide nice features for editing content.

What I am not sure is about the 100 users - I do not have that much on my pages. I also could not find any restriction on the surreal cms page. You may have to check with them.

There is also a 30 days trial possible.

I like this solution because the implementation is very easy and also for the user he gets a WYSIWYG interface which make it easier for non developers to maintain web pages.

There is also a nice feature regarding revisions. If a change have to be undo after the page was published you can go back an reload a previous revision.

here a very basic introduction I quickly have done

Very interesting Alain, thanks for that. I’d never heard of it.

Hi Alain

Thanks for bringing Surreal to my attention, and also for your introduction. It looks very interesting.

The pricing indicates unlimited users per plan (1-5 sites is the Started Plan).

I’m about to head out for a while, so I’ll look more in depth in the morning.

Cheers

You could certainly do this with MODX Revolution http://modx.com. It’s designed to be highly scalable and you have granular control over who can edit what but adding a 100 users/editors, while certainly not difficult, would be tedious. It may be possible to automate part of the process through add-ons, I can’t say for certain, but if not it might still be possible through manually extending the framework (programming) which is another area MODX excels at. In any case it’s absolutely doable but keep in mind it’s completely different from something like Pulse or WebYep.

My pseudo “review” of MODX Revo http://xiiro.com/musings/2012/07/04/modx/.
If you’re interested in using MODX with FW here’s my quick tutorial: http://xiiro.com/musings/2013/02/05/modx-freeway/.

If you have questions let me know. I’m not sure if anyone else on this list currently uses MODX for production work.

Perch have just launched a member app

This is the blurb from their email
The Members app provides the ability for users to register and log into an account on your website. This may be to gain access to secured content including downloads, or perhaps to maintain a profile. The app helps you manage members and gives you the tools to build member-based functionality into your site.

I have not yet used it

Hi Paul,

From your reply, the actual… potential site growth, languages, taking money online etc is probably more than I would normally recommend for WebYep.

WebYep can do most, if not all, of those functions but not on the large scale you are considering… you/the system could potentially be creating tens of thousands of unique login names and pages etc. For this I would recommend looking at one of the bigger and more powerful cms systems, which is based around a proper database…

All the best Max

Thanks Todd, Marcel and Max for your help and suggestions.

I’ll give Surreal a go with the 30 day trial, to get some experience for comparisons

During this time I’ll endeavour to try MODX and Perch (with the members app) as well.

The three products should certainly be able to handle my requirements. The ultimate choice will come down to ease of use and implementation with Freeway.

Hopefully I’ll be able to post some constructive feedback at some point.

Thanks again
Paul

Hi Paul and Alain

So how is Surreal and how easy is it to integrate with Freeway?

Is it easy to create new pages and then for the client to add those pages to the nav / menu bar (styled in Freeway using the CSS Menu Action)?

Cheers

Hi Mark

I’m using Surreal, but I’ve only added one client. My web site is still under construction - a much larger project than I envisaged.

I found it very easy to integrate with Freeway.

My scenario may different, as I am not designing a site for a client. I am the client, and I sell a page or two to my ‘sub’ clients. I hadn’t considered letting my sub clients loose into the nav/menu bar though. My process is to create/duplicate a page for them, with the correct links inserted, and then give them access to edit the data themselves.

As far as making sure the content is editable via the CMS, select the item on the page, go Item (Menu Bar)>Extended and under

or enter ‘class’ (below Name) and ‘editable’ (below Value) without the inverted commas.

Cheers

You may want to look at HotScripts or another code hosting site for a Member Management System. This sounds like a very straightforward example of that design pattern. The user can edit a “profile” page, right? Not edit actual content elsewhere in the site?

All of these CMS systems are geared toward having multiple “editors” who can have graded access to the shared content of a news or magazine site or similar. I’ve used Joomla! and Drupal for this sort of thing in the past, Joomla! in particular is really designed for this exact pattern, and force-fit into other types of site as almost an afterthought.

But what you describe does not sound like that at all. I’m actually thinking it’s more like the FreewayTalk site, where you can edit your profile page for other members to see, but cannot edit other member’s pages. Does that sound correct?

Hi Walter

Your description does sound like my implementation of Surreal.

I could, however, allow multiple users to edit a page/s if I wanted them to, and/or allow them ‘admin’ status as well, but at the moment that’s not my intention.

Thanks for the info on Hotscripts. Lots of information there also to ponder and digest.
