I have been struggling to get the Carosel action to work via the protaculous action bundle. I am using Freeway 4 Pro. The action info claims it will work with this version. (is this true?)
I followed the instructions on the Walter Davis web site (steps 1-5) but the behavior on my project is not working.
When I go to apply the carosel action to the first “pane” the carosel action is not listed as an option, only “carosel text tab” and “protaculous”.
I am just an “average user”. I haven’t tried many actions so excuse my learning curve since this seems like a very complicated action.
Thanks in advance., Grayson
I no longer have 4 here to test with, but I may be able to help. I’d like you to follow these steps precisely, see if the basic Action can work, and then if it doesn’t work any more, I’ll see if I can sort it out at the Action level.
Before you do anything, choose Edit / Actions from the main menu, look through the entire list, and see if any of the Actions in the Protaculous bundle are un-checked (disabled). If they are, see if that resolves the issue in your existing document. Otherwise, continue below:
While no documents are open, go through the list of Actions again, double-check that none of them are disabled by default. (Anything you do in Freeway, preference-wise, while there are no documents open, “sticks” as a global preference that all new documents inherit.)
New document, XHTML Strict. Ensure that the CSS Layout button is on (it doesn’t read Table Layout instead).
Draw an HTML box on the page, 200px x 100px. Set its color to blue. While this box is still selected (handles showing) choose Item / Duplicate from the main menu, and move the duplicate away from the original so you can see both. Change the duplicate’s background color to red.
Click once on the blue box, and from the main menu, choose Item / Actions / Carousel. In the Actions palette, set the Auto-glide to 2 and the direction to horizontal.
Click once on the red box, and from the main menu, choose Item / Actions / Carousel Pane. Click on the Target picker, just to be sure that your first box is selected as the parent to this pane.
Preview (and be sure to target a newly-made site folder). You should see the red and blue boxes wiping to replace one another over and over.
If that works, please let me know. There may be something funny about your specific document or its settings that is causing the Action to hide like this.

You’re going to need to take this up with support(a)softpress.com – they wrote the version detection function inside the Action where you’re getting that error, and I no longer have a machine that can run version 4 here. This code has been in place in all of the Scripty Actions since version 4 was the latest thing – and this is the first report I have heard of this not working. One thing you might do is make sure you have the very latest version of Freeway 4 – I don’t recall if 4.2.2 is it or not.
Many thanks. The version I am running is 4.4.2 which would seem to be the last version issued. Just to clarify, the latest Protaculous action should definately work with F/W 4 Pro? Ihave also tried the action on an older PPC mac running 10.5.8 and the result is the same.
I will take advice from Softpress.
Hello Walter, I contacted Softpress support and Keith Rigley was unable to activate Carousel on 4.4.2 - however he advised me that he had very successfully run Carousel2 and kindly sent me a demo file. I am now up and running. Many thanks.
