How can I put a visible counter on a home page?

Why would you want to?

Visible counters are so last century.

David, Not looking for an aesthetic discussion, but help. Don’t you think that you’re being kind of rude? Scott

If you really must do it then hop on over to a site like http://www.hitwebcounter.com/webcounter.php - there are many others available.

Configure your counter and copy the code.

Now on your FW page use Insert>Markup Item and when the window opens paste your code.

Now OK it and you will have a Markup item on your FW page.

Size it and position it to suit your 90s layout and you are GTG

Only if you take it so personally!

In fairness I think David was making a broader point. It’s not purely about aesthetics, there are also practical reasons (negative perceptions your visitors might make about your site) which might motivate you to not use a visible counter. But if you don’t care that’s fine. Do your thang.

I just can’t wait visiting that page, so curious how many visitors were there before I showed up …

Wow. I’m not here very often, but it’s nice to know that when I ask a technical question, locals make snide, insinuating comments instead of just answering. Your hospitality here is overwhelming. If I had wanted to start a discussion about whether visible counters were “cool” or not, I would have. Guess some of you just can’t help yourselves and need to feel superior. Well, guess you are. Happy now?

I can see that - but equally it would be nice for the folk that have offered you advice in the past to receive some thanks for it.

You don’t have any unanswered questions here - it would be good if you acknowledged that fact.

FWIW some hosts provide data on site/page visits in their control panel. Check it out with yours.

If I want your opinion, I’ll ask for it … aka just speak when you’re spoken to.

Sounds pretty superior to me. Never accepted any “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” advise in the past? You might want to try it.

Dear Richard, You didn’t post it that way, you were snarky and sarcastic. Great style of help.

So Scott - have you got the info you need to create your counter now?

Of course that link should have been http://www.hitwebcounter.com/

Yes I was, sorry about smashing your ego about that. I could have known it would offend you rather than make you think twice about the underlying motivation not to use Counters, simply: “don’t use visible counters, it’s cheap and gives no valid or useful information to me as a visitor”.

But hey … we all know each other here. And if not, we kindly introduce ourselves, and say thanks for given advise. What we don’t do is being a smart ass as soon as we don’t get our ice cream. You’re no longer on the school playground, so grow a pair and take well meant advise at heart before you talk like that to people who mean a lot to us all.

To quote George Bernard Shaw, “Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.”

I’m outta here. oink! oink! Won’t be reading any more responses, so edify yourselves, boys.

And thanks to Karen E and Todd, the polite ones who responded.

… unbelievable!

Am happy with my decision stopping any kind of support - my personal blacklist would rise beyond measure without control.

Cheers

I’m kind of old school myself … and old: 71  Maybe I’m looking at it wrong, but wouldn’t a large number of page visits shown on the visible counter indicate that the website may be substantial? Perhaps research has shown this thinking to be wrong?

My StatCounter shows just under 12 million pageviews to date. Wouldn’t that tend to add credibility? Maybe not. Help an old guy out here, please.

One more thing. If I do keep my counter, does anyone know if StatCounter has been a reliable, nonspamming tool?

I’ve used StatCounter for many years and found it to be reliable. But I also use GoSquared and Piwik in addition to SC.
