It’s been a while since I’ve created a Favicon and for the life of me I can’t remember what software or plug-in I used. I usually use Adobe CS but I can’t recall how I created the Favicon. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I found a Photoshop plug-in called ICOFormat – for free – last time I looked. I haven’t tried it with CS5.5, but it worked well with CS3. There is also a great site called favicon-generator.org which will let you upload an image in GIF, JPEG, or PNG format and convert it to a favicon (ICO) file for you.
The benefit to using ICO over other formats is that many browsers (Safari and Explorer) will look unbidden for a file called favicon.ico in the root of your site even if you don’t add the link to it in the head of your page. Best to have the file be there, rather than litter your errors log with 404s for that file.

And there are plenty of online resources where you can upload an image for favicon generation.
I’ve noticed that a lot of company logos don’t translate well to website favicons. Freeway Talk is an exception. Clearly, the simpler and more contrasty the better. How creative do you guys get with the favicons? Feel free to post examples.
I feel like I’m spending way too much time on little details?
Open a new Photoshop document at 16px square. Zoom until it fills the screen. Select the Pencil tool. Start drawing. Whatever you do, don’t use a big photo squashed down to 16px.

You can get Graphic Converter from Lemeke Software and get a whole lot more than just the ability to make icons. I have been using it as a workhorse for years, constant free updates and great CS group like this one.
I think it is still a full trial and about $45 if you like it - Don’t use the App store if you’d like the frequent updates.
