I’m trying out Pro and pulling out my hair with styling my menu bar. First it wouldn’t take my text styling. After much fiddling, it took the font and size, but reverted to standard blue. Now I’ve tried countless times to get the CSS menu actions palette to open, but it just will not. At first it was styling the color and alignment, but not the text. Now it does the font and size but not color, because the CSS menu item won’t open. HELP!! This program seems very wonky. Is the trial version not fully functional?
Have you tried clicking on the ‘Window’ menu item and ensuring that ‘Actions’ has a tick next to it.
Shift+Cmd+H also Shows/Hides the palettes. The Action palette could also be behind another one.
As far as styling of text in a CSS Menu item goes you should only style the text with Font and Size - link colours etc. should all be done through the action interface.
So if you have applied any colours etc. the select all the text in the Menu item and choose Style>Remove Styling
Thank you. I was able to tick the Actions in the window menu and view the CSS Menu palette. However, even though I have the styling correct…only styling font and size in the text attributes, and colors only in the Action palette…it still is wonky. Will not style font and size correctly. How do you update the site so it will show changes made?

Can you be a bit more specific. A link to an online example will help us diagnose your issue and if you can let us know what we are supposed to see that would be a bonus.
But without a bit more we would be struggling.
If you still have issues after looking through Thomas’ links then let us know. But remember that your menu items will have to have a link applied to them before the link styling in the action will take effect. You can create a dummy link by selecting the text and Edit>Hyperlink, choose External and Protocol:Other then type an octothorp # in the dialogue box.
thank you so much, David and Thomas. I can’t wait to work with what you’ve both said, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. I’m off to a big Arts Fest today…
Thomas, looked at your website…looks like a fantastic resource.
Maybe with all this wonderful and generous help, I may be able to use this program after all. I will send examples, as you asked David…hopefully this forum format allows screenshots.
If you like, you are welcome to visit my current website, which I am trying to more or less duplicate in Freeway, so that I can more easily edit and clean up some of the messy CSS and make it more social friendly. Hope to redo all the galleries so they are consistent and navigate better.
Upload your screenshots to a public server somewhere, then use Markdown* format to link to them (if you want them to appear inline here) or simply include a full URL to the image, and we can click on the link here.

But screenshots only tell a small part of the story. Links to a live page online are far more useful to us. And since you already have a web site I would suggest that you create a sub folder on there ie 亚洲,色,图综合日韩另类,偷自视频区视频在线,中文字幕v亚洲日本,国产1区二区三区四区 and set FW to upload into there.
If you dont already have a testsite folder then use your FTP app (or your web control panel) to create one. Then in FW your upload path would be something like…
OK…thanks everyone!
I’ve uploaded what I have so far to this url:
It looks awful. First issue…menu bar fonts not formatting properly. Please see what it should look like at:
Also I am not able to shrink that menu box to fit into the background (short in height) box where it’s supposed to be. That black bg it creates is obscuring what is underneath. I tried to make it transparent, but no dice. Help?
I am looking for simple software I can use to redo my site so that it will be easy for a non-geeky designer (me) to keep it up and make it social-media friendly.
One of the first things you want to do is define a default text style for your FW doc.
Your existing site uses font-family: “Trebuchet MS”, Tahoma, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; for the menu - presumably you want the same for this.
And if you want the same font for the whole site then look at Thomas’s video about defining a body style which will do this. http://kimmich-dm.de/wordpress/?p=931
But first you will have to create a Font set using Edit>Font Set - there should be one in there that would only require a minor tweak.
This is so not working for me. My frustration is getting very high.
I don’t want the same font for the whole site, but as a default that would be fine…and so I followed instructions and set up “p” for trebuchet 14 point. It looks different in the program when i type, than it does in Safari when published. Also I am unable to get the last line “Hot Steel Design: High concept…etc” to break, like I was able to do with the other lines.
Also now that I’ve made all the items into CSS layers, the page is acting very strange in Safari. You can see that when you scroll, the content is scrolling but not the BG image. Also the BG image is now obscuring the menu bar, which I had to place completely below in order to see it.
Is this program just really wonky, or is my site design too complex for it to handle?
Also I styled the menu bar as per your instructions and it did not change. The font trebuchet is not being accessed.
Also the BG image is now obscuring the menu bar, which I had to place completely below in order to see it.
The important thing to remember when you are using Layers is that you have to make sure that some layers are not on top of others and hiding them. You may have to select a Layer and Send it to Bacl (from the item menu)

No and No - your site is quite straightforward. Have you gone through the tutorials that will walk you through the basics or have you just jumped in? I do recommend watching/reading them.
I styled the menu bar as per your instructions and it did not change
I can even see the menu on the page at the previous link you gave - have you uploaded it?
Also having had a look at your bg image I can see that you have not applied it as a page background so it will not appear behind everything else and the way that you have designed it with rectangular areas that your text boxes are supposed to ‘fit into’ will not work unless you use pure graphic text. This is because different Browsers/OS/Devices will display text and differing sizes and if that is any larger than you have designed your bg image for it will spill out.
There is no reason why you cannot colour your text containers the same as you have in the bg image - that way they can expand if the text size varies.
Dont have time for an example just now but could probably do one tonight.
Hi David,
again, first thanks so much for taking the time to deal with all my issues.
Yes I have looked at some, not all of the tutorials. I will make the BG image I have, to apply as background image for the index page. I looked for a way to send that layer to the back, but could not find it.
The reason you can’t see the menu bar in the first link I sent is because that updated to the current version.
As for the rectangular box I have designed onto the BG image…it does work and has worked since 2009 on all browsers, albeit with a tiny bit of unhappiness with the text aligning higher or lower. And it is not possible to get that glowing effect that is very specific, using html, so it has to be in the image. Yes I could compromise my design so it’s flat and not transparent using html to design the bg for the menu bar, but would rather not. That’s why I ask if my design is too difficult for this program to handle. I originally designed the site in Dreamweaver…but that was not easy.
I’ll work on it some more and post another link. Thanks again, you are an angel for taking so much of your time to help me.
the glow is around the perimeter of all the dark boxes. I know it’s subtle and most wouldn’t actually notice…but as a designer and artist, i know that it has a subliminal effect of creating some kind of “specialness”. Call me crazy. or stupid. But that’s my story and i’m sticking to it. ; )
I was hoping to find a piece of software that made this easy. I actually don’t need to go out and purchase something that is almost as difficult as Dreamweaver, which I already own, and has much more capability, since it’s an editor. Supposed to be WYSIWIG…not so much though. I guess I’m not really looking to get out and push, as you say. I want to find a way to do this that doesn’t require me to become a web geek, all over again. But i will continue trying to make it work and maybe see if I can get over this initial difficulty…and then the rest might be easier. And I’ll continue to push through more of the video tutorials to see if I’ve missed something there. Thank you again.
We are back at the old chestnut of design for fixed dimension media and design for the web and the multitude of devices that can view a web page.
Have you looked at your page on an iPhone - the subtlety is lost there.
I was hoping to find a piece of software that made this easy.
I suspect that you are using it already - Photoshop!
But if you want a page that is going to look good on the majority of devices then you are going to have to work harder.
Freeway will happily let you build a page on top of the constraints of a fixed dimension background image if that is what you want. But with the variety of users and different devices they expect more.
You are so right! Of course, I get it. I do want my page to read well on multiple devices…
so are you saying that my BG image is not going to work on mobile devices? I guess you are…So this means I will have to really redesign my background images from scratch. And get ok with using html elements for nav bars, etc. Oh dear. I guess I’m going to have to re-think this whole thing.
I haven’t done any web design for many years…and so this is all new to me and I don’t really have clarity about how websites work on mobile media. So please forgive my ignorance. But i did watch the Freeway tutorials on that for v.7 and it helps with my understanding.
allright…i’m going to sit and think about if I’m ready to ditch my current design and start over…maybe actually make things easy on myself and use a template (gasp!!!). Do you think that would solve a lot of my issues?
