[Pro] Download file action

Where can I get it? I used to have it, now it’s gone. Can’t find it on ActionsForge.

Not sure which action/filetype you want to download.

How about http://www.actionsforge.com/actions/view/198-force-download-php

I tried “force download” and got an error message on upload saying “could not find ~dl.php”. I was unaware that “download file” was renamed “graphic link to file”. BUT, this is not a download but a link to open file in new window. I can’t remember if “download file” action was true download. Many users do not know to “option-click” (or whatever the Windows equivalent is) to download.

What exactly are you trying to do with an action - the more specific you are the better we can help,

I would like to have a visitor click on an item which initiates a download to their machine.

The easiest way to do this is to Zip archive the file in question,
then use either the Link to File (inline Action) or the Graphic Link
to File (item Action) to create the download link. If you use the
former, simply place your text cursor where you want the download link
to appear, and use the Insert / Action Item / Link to File option in
your main menu (this is a built-in Action, don’t need to download it
or install it). If you want the latter, draw a graphic box on the
page, fill it with an image or text, and while it is selected, use the
Item / Actions / Graphic Link to File option from the main menu.

Both of these Actions have similar interfaces available in the Actions
palette. There is a file selector that allows you to choose the linked
file. And in the case of the inline Link to File Action, there is
another field where you enter the link text that will appear on screen
inside the link to the file.

Once you have done this, you should be set.

If you are trying to link to a file type that the browser understands
natively, then you have to do a lot of extra work to force the browser
to download the file instead of displaying it directly. This is like
swimming up-river, because you are fighting against the browser and
how the Web is designed to work.

If you Zip the file, there isn’t a browser on Earth that can read that
natively, so the file is forced to be downloaded. This opens up a
couple of usability issues, though, because the user then has to
decompress the file before reading it, and in the case of Windows
users, they are (or should be) trained by painful experience not to
trust Zip archives, since that’s how they got their last several dozen
cases of the “computer clap”.

This is a trade-off, and a clumsy one, and it comes from trying to
fight how the Web is supposed to work. As a collection of linked
documents, the Web allows anything to point to anything else, and
leaves the interpretation of content up to the browser and the user’s
choice. When you try to take away choice, you will find that it’s very
hard to get that toothpaste back into the tube.

Thank you for that, Walter. I’ll give the visitor an option, including both the new browser link and the Zip if they dare.

I know you said you tried the Force Download action and got an error. Did the file name that you were/are using have any space characters or other odd characters in it.

If so then ensure that you only use alphanumerics, underlines and hyphens.

It does have a hyphen and .jpg.

So you want to force a download of an image file - specifically a jpg

The FD action works for me - example at http://deltadesign.co/ContentFlow/fdtest.html

You did upload the page to the server didn’t you?

And your server is PHP enabled?

I used the Freeway uploader. Just double checked with the server and it executes php. Got your “wiring” pic, I’ll try FD.

The action creates a file called ‘your_file_name-dl.php’ Make sure that this file is on your server in the same location as the page with the action on it.

Tried it again with same results. It seems that Freeway is looking for a file with same name only the file extension is changed from ‘jpg to -dl.php’.

Exact error message is:
“Uplading file “Picture”-dl.php
Cannot complete upload because file not found.
(-43:326:422)”

Upload is aborted.

How are you applying the action.

In my example the action is applied to a graphic - are you trying to apply it to the same graphic as you are wishing to download?

If so try creating a differently named graphic to apply the action to (a thumbnail?) - just in case there is a naming conflict.

With action applied then in the action inspector palette use the selector to choose the file to download ie the full size version.

It is not applied to same graphic. It is applied to graphic text with same name except no extension. Don’t think Freeway should confuse that, but I’ll try thumbnail.

Wow, I got identical error with thumbnail.

I cannot tell where you are going wrong without seeing your FW doc.

What I would do

1 Remove the action and republish/upload the page

2 Shut down FW and restart your Mac

3 Start again on a new blank page with just a graphic (any graphic) with the action applied to it and the action parameters set to the image you want to download.

4 Upload and test
