New to Freeway, but not new to web design. I am switching from web design on the ‘evil empire’ platform to the Mac (and there was much rejoicing…), and choosing Freeway as the most likely platform over Dreamweaver.
Watched all the beginning tutorials, and now have an editing question.
I am using the ‘Shine’ template with the Pro trial. I want to edit the rollover buttons to read correctly, but do not know how to “unstack” the graphics to edit the names and the labels on the buttons. I can change one, but not the underlying names, so when you roll over the buttons they read differently. ( followed the duplication process to get the new buttons, but I am unsure what all needs to be edited ‘behind the scenes’.
Question topic 1: Is there an easy way to see all of the items related to a button (or element) and switch between the 3 button states without having to try to select each graphically?
The rollover tutorial shows how to create the graphic and to align them, but not how to select them separately to edit them.
Question topic 2: When I duplicated the button by selecting the button with a marquee, and then: Item>Duplicate> set the number at 6 and the spacing at 23px, I got some buttons that looked the same and usually a couple of them that showed the gray colored ‘over’ state as the top button. In other words, some duplicated correctly, while others did not… I thought this strange as it was only one button selected, so they should all duplicate the same, Right? Perhaps a bug, or is it an 'Operator bug" :o)
Thanks for the help! Looks like a great program.

Hi Mark and welcome to FW
Question topic 1: Is there an easy way to see all of the items related to a button (or element) and switch between the 3 button states without having to try to select each graphically?
With your document open in FW you can switch from Site (view) to Page (view) - at the top of the left most column you will see the Site selector (just under the Select Tool in the toolbar)
Clicking on this will change it to Page view and this will then show you each individual item on your FW page. (You may have to click on the disclosure triangle to reveal them). If you start on the Master page for Shine you will see all the items listed below.
If you then select one of these items and hit the Enter key that item will be brought to front for editing and the cursor will be active in the box.
Remember to edit navigation and other common items on the Master page so that all changes will propagate to the ‘Child’ pages.
Question topic 2: When I duplicated the button by selecting the button with a marquee, and then: Item>Duplicate> set …
Use the same method to select the items that you want to duplicate so that you only select the relevant ones. Also note that the hierarchy of Page items works from bottom to top - in other words items further down the list are nearer the front of the page if they are layered. In other words they will be on top of items higher on the list if they are positioned at the same place on the page.
This should give you a start on editing Shine and feel free to jump back in with more questions - and remember - the only stupid question is the one you don’t ask.

Thanks David.
My problem is trying to select the graphic elements on a roll over button separately to edit them. For instance, I have spent literally a couple of hours (I am afraid to say to this group that is really is more like 4-5 hours) trying to change the labels on the various states of a rollover button. If the button text only has one color (the same color for the on and off state,), then only one button state needs text, and it doesn’t change color.
BUT, in the Shine template, the duplicate buttons I created have a different color in the ‘over’ state. It is white when rolled over and the button color turns gray.
What I am trying to do is change the text on both buttons: the over and the normal state of the buttons. However, the only button text I can select in the rollover actions dialog is the bottom most choice: the text that is shown when the button is rolled over.
SO, when I preview the button in a browser, the button still reads the same text that the one I duplicated it from reads (ie: I duplicated the “About us” button, and all of the dup’s read “About Us”, even if I changed the text in the Actions dialog). However, when I roll over the button, it reads “Aircraft” which is the text I changed.
My main question is how to select and change the text on a lower level graphic…
I am stumped. How do I select the lower level graphic to change the text on a stacked series of graphics.
My other question dealt with why the graphic elements I duplicated came out different than the original button I tried to duplicate. I selected the “About Us” button, and duplicated it 6 times. 2 of the duplicates showed the gray roll over version of the button when I went to the page view vs the Master view. Harumph… I would guess I selected the wrong elements to duplicate, but when I chose 6 copies, and 2 of the six are showing the ‘rolled over’ state when I go to the preview/page view… what happened?
Thanks again!

I have watched the new ‘Moments’ video on the website reviewing rollovers in FW5. It is the first time I saw the Site vs Page button at the top of the left side of the screen. So, clicking on this button I see now the page elements listed as you mentioned in the first reply.
However, all of the elements listed for the rollover buttons appear as separate actions, vs the way the video showed them, as elements of one item, such as a button.
What I see is an action gear with the label homeNormal with a tick box label underneath that geared action that says homeNormalText1. Below that is a separate action named homeOver, and the tick box label homeoverText1.
The video shows all of these choices under one action choice called (in the video) item1.
I can understand the naming differences, but I don’t understand why the template has all of these actions under separate choices. Perhaps this is why I can’t change the text on the button states? (Only the upper most layer).
Thanks again for the help.

Your list of items in the inspector goes like this
homeNormal
homeNormalText1
homeOver
homeOverText1
So if you want to edit the text in the Home button for the normal state then click that item in the Page Inspector (LHS of screen) to select ‘homeNormalText1’ and then hit the ‘Enter’ key the cursor appears in the ‘homeNormal’ text box and you can select and change the text.

Thank You David!
That worked, and it was so simple I couldn’t figure it out by myself!
I would select the item on the left hand side of the screen and double click. It would highlight the item on the right side of the screen, and I would then try to select it with the cursor to edit it and it would jump to the bottom selection on the LHS, and I would go nuts!
It did not dawn on me to use the enter key to select the LHS item in the page view mode.
However, I am just getting to know the program so once I ‘get’ it, things should be easier…
Thanks again.

I now can confidently duplicate and edit a rollover button.
When testing the changes in a browser I get a warning message: OVERFLOWED TEXT: … with the name of the edited button showing. I deleted everything in the text box when making the changes so I am not sure why the overflow, or where to find it. Thoughts?
I promise not to ask TOO many questions, just the ones I can’t figure out on my own after searching…

The chances are that you have non-layered items overlapping each other.
Move the offending items so that they do NOT overlap and you will be sorted.
The Shine template uses non layered items so positioning is critical to avoid this.

Thank you. After looking at the button, I am not sure what would overlap, nor where to identify a layered vs non-layered item. I see the tick box to identify the ‘layer’ option, and they are not checked.
If you duplicate an item, does it not make an exact copy of the original? If the original is not overlapping, and the button is 4 pixels away from the parent button, what should I look for that overlaps?
BTW, I still were the hat I bought in Glasgow in 1984… Loved the pubs. :o)
Thanks again!

Yes but it can overlap other items on the page - look at the actual page for signs of this rather than the items list.
Look for a box with a big X in it - it will help if you go to the View Menu and Turn on Outlines ie View>Outlines (make sure it is checked). While there you can do the same with Titles and it will help you to identify things easier. Easily turned off when you don’t need it.
Non layered have a blue border while Layered have a green one.
Also try Item>Bring to Front/Send to Back. Non layered Graphics cant sit on top of non layered HTML items. It may be that your Graphic buttons are on top of an HTML text container.
On that particular layout make sure that the item ‘bodyHTML’ is at the bottom of the page Item list - which means on top of the pile visually.

Well, I am watching the tutorial video’s again, after having worked with the program for a while and low and behold, there was the ‘site vs page’ view explained in video #2. I hadn’t ‘seen’ it until you pointed it out to me in the thread here. Duh!
I still can’t figure out what buttons are overlapping some item, but am investigating. Nothing I select seems to be over anything else, but I am determined to discover the issue…
Just a post to say thanks… Sometimes you don’t see the answer until it pokes you in the eye!
