[Pro] email migration

how can i get my new hosting company to recognize or be able to see the old emails from the old hosting company?

I’m not a developer, so a simple step by step instruction would be appreciated. Or if i need to call someone…ie the old or new hosting company, I can do that.

thank you in advance,
pete

That depends a lot on the current state of your “old” server. If you discontinued the service already, then the disk space has probably been recycled and there’s no way to get back old messages. That’s how IMAP servers work – all your data stays in one place – on the server – and your various devices look at it there, set flags on it related to what you’ve done with it (read, delete, move to folder, etc.). When you discontinue such a service, you need to migrate any old mail that you wish to keep to one of your Macs, and then you can move it back up to the “cloud” if you want to maintain the “store once, read many” approach to your mail history.

If you didn’t discontinue the old server, but merely changed where your domain name has pointed, you can get back to your old server if you know its IP address. You will need to do something extremely geeky (edit a hidden text file on your Mac) in order to temporarily fool your Mac into looking at the old server instead of the new one. This is know as the hosts file, and it serves as a first-line DNS (Domain Name Server) for your Mac. Any addresses you map in this file will be considered more authoritative than the global DNS provided by your ISP or other DNS provider.

So let us know if we need to trot out the geek squad instructions, otherwise (if you cancelled the account) there’s really no way to recover.

Thanks Walt,
sorry for the late delay. I called the old hosting company and we’re working it out.
