[Pro] Embedding MP3 on a page

I do not have Quicktime Pro.

I dragged and dropped an MP3 file onto my webpage and opened it in Preview. The file automatically started to play. I tried it in Firefox Browser and, again the file automatically started to play.

I don’t want this…

I would like the file to start when you press the start button. How do I make this work?

Also, I would like to be able to make it so that folk can download this MP3. How can I do that?

All answers gratefully received in words of one syllable.

And do I need to buy QT Pro?

Cheers
Frances

Hi Frances,
Have a look at this thread for QuickTime related music;
http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/62493

Alternatively you may want to try the Yahoo Media Player Action;

Tim.

Thank you - I will give it a go tomorrow - my brain has gone all boggly-eyed tonight!

It does not give me the option for folk to download the mp3.

This is essential as it is for a Band website and they want their fans to be able to download their music.

Any suggestions?

Have a search on http://freewaytalk.net for the term ‘force download’.
I’ve written about this at length in the past.

You will probably find it easiest to have a separate folder of
“download” files, and then to make your links to those and use
the .htaccess trick within that folder to force them to download.
Trying to allow both an on-page player and downloads from the same
exact file (stored in the same place on the same server) will be
technically possible, but challenging, particularly for the newcomer
to server programming.

Hi Frances,
Does your server support PHP? I wrote a simple action a while ago that uses PHP to force files to download rather than let the browser (or plug-in) deal with them.
You can find a simple example of the Force Download (PHP) Action below. In the example the action forces the browser to download a standard JPG, an mp3 file and a PDF.

As well as the Action download you can also download a sample Freeway 5.5 Pro file that uses the action.
Regards,
Tim.

Thank you Tim - perfect! Now just got to make a button.

One thing, these Action Folders - where do you put them in the grand scheme of things? ie once on the app, can you throw the file away or do you keep it with the App?

Also, when it looked for the mp3 on my desktop, it didn’t load.

Should the mp3 already be loaded on the website and then the link to find it there?

Hi Frances,
Yes, once installed the copy of the Action file on your desktop can be removed as Freeway has installed a copy in the Actions folder. Here’s a guide to Action install locations;

Tim.

Hi Frances,
Add the Action to your page and use the controls in the Action palette to define the file you want to download. The Action will handle the file upload as well as creating the PHP and links to it.
I don’t know what you mean by didn’t load. After you downloaded the mp3 the file didn’t open?
Regards,
Tim.
