[Pro] Fonts missing

Suddenly most of my fonts have gone missing from my available fonts in Freeway (my CS5 suite as well). Font Book lists the MIAs as valid and enabled and Text Edit sees them all and can use them.

What would make something like this happen and where might I start to find a solution?

Did you guys recently upgrade your systems or something? I’m still using
Lion, CS5.5, FWP 5.6.4 with no such issues. Although instead of Font Book,
am using FontExplorer Pro.

Heck, I’m still on 10.6.8

Been working just fine so I figure if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The only thing I did was run Onyx for general maintenance, but that’s always worked fine.

Meanwhile, I can’t update my site since among the dark fonts are the ones I use for text.

Hi Ernie,

I’m on 10.7.4 (whatever flavour of feline that is) and FWP 5.6.4, and I use FontXplorer Pro.

Like you, I thought it was something I’d one to upgrade on my Mac, but I haven’t, apart from the usual OSX and/or Acrobat updates. And like Edgework, in CS5 also. Also the working view fonts in Freeway have gone up the spout - use Verdana (or whatever) and the screen displays Times from the very limited fonts I have available to it.

10.7.4 is the same Lion I’m running…

I updated my FWP font sets not too long ago, certainly after the Lion
upgrade - is it something to do with graphic fonts? Or all the regular text
fonts as well?

Now you have me afraid of breaking my install of FWP

No, nothing to do with Graphic fonts.

Looking in FontXplorer, I have 216 fonts open, in Freeway I only have options for:
Proportional
Fixed
Courier
Georgia
Helvetica
Symbol
Times Trebuchet
Verdana

but funnily enough, just today if I go to make a font set, I have just under 200 available (which I didn’t have last week). All of these would have previously been available in the New Styles dropdown box listed above.

I have seen this happen in the past, but it’s always been very recoverable. To be clear, what I’m talking about here is this: you have a font set created in Freeway (even one of the defaults) that uses Trebuchet or Verdana or some other (not Times) font as its first font in the cascade, and the screen font that you see in the design view is resolutely Times. The fix is to close all documents, Edit / Font Sets, choose your font set, and re-choose the desired Screen Font using the picker in the Edit Font Set dialog. The issue is that you may have installed a print version of these fonts, and the default font for the family is actually called Verdana Regular or something like that. Whatever, it doesn’t exactly match the plain word Verdana, and so the screen font defaults to Times.

If this isn’t what you are talking about, here’s another idea. If you have a zillion fonts on your Mac, it may take Font Explorer a while to start up and load those fonts. If you have also enabled the feature in Lion to re-open all applications and documents at restart, then you have a race condition on your hands. Freeway starts up pretty quickly, and Freeway has to cache all of the currently-enabled fonts at its own startup. It can only use or show you the fonts that are enabled when the application started. Solution here is to quit Freeway, then re-start it (or disable the auto-open feature).

Hi Walter, sorry for the late reply, I’m not working in my usual place at the moment, so will report back when I get a chance.
