[Pro] Freeway on opening

Just updated my Mac Pro to latest 10.6.7 and now Freeway crashes on open. Can’t get past ‘Freeway has unexpectedly quit’. Upgraded Freeway to 5.5.7 and same result. Quite perplexed the program has always run fine up until now.

Try running Disk Utility and then Repair Permissions. You should always do this anyway as a matter of course for every time an app is installed or updated, or any system updates.

Also, check to see if there’s a font fix available from Software Update. If not, run through this KB article:

Yes - I have been holding off from installing 10.6.7 because of this issue that many folk have reported.

I was hoping that Apple would have sorted it by now - maybe it cant be?

Thanks chuckamuck. Just repaired disk permissions and no result unfortunately.

I’ll try Joe Billings solution. Really regret upgrading my system now but needed it for film production software upgrade.

Just tried Joe’s solution too and no luck. Bummer. This has put me in a bad situation with a client. I’ll have to find another machine and install old system software on it at this stage to fix their file.

All I’ve gotten after all those attempted solutions is the box “Freeway 5.5 quit unexpectedly.” straight after open…

Try making a new user in the System Preferences app. Log in as that
user, and see if Freeway launches. If it does, then your problem is
either corrupted preferences or a dodgy font. My money is on the font.
That’s the one thing that will reliably torque Freeway.

To test this, go back to your regular login, and disable half the
fonts. Try launching Freeway. If it works, then quit it, re-enable
half of the fonts you disabled, and try again. If it crashes, then
disable half of the fonts you just enabled, and try again. Keep going
until you narrow down exactly which font is causing the problem. This
is known as a fast sort, because it is.

Any possibility you’ve got one of the bum installers?
Can you try another?
(Sorry if I missed that in previous posts-)

Afraid not. I upgraded to Snow Leopard while on Freeway 5.5. That’s when it stopped working.

Then upgraded Freeway to 5.5.7. Still not working. So the installer can’t be the issue.

Just removed all duplicate fonts and any other fonts with issues. Still not working! Anyone else having this issue with the latest system?

I’m running OS X 10.6.7 and Freeway 5.5.7. I’ve not done much heavy lifting with Freeway lately, but I’ve certainly launched it and twiddled with it for an hour or two without any problems.

Thanks Paul. I’ll go through Walter’s suggestion of isolating fonts next.

Ok, so here’s the latest chapter in the saga.

I actually have a MacBook Pro and a MacPro both running 10.6.7 system and both attempting to run Freeway 5.5.7.

Freeway works fine on the MacBook Pro but hasn’t yet been able to startup at all on the MacPro.

I’ve compared font lists on both machines and deleted anything on the MacPro that isn’t in Font Book on the MacBook Pro. Still, Freeway refuses to start.

Does anyone have any clues about my next step? I’m running out of ideas!

My specs are:

2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
RAM: 10 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard Drive has 135GB free.

Freeway ran absolutely fine until my upgrade on this machine to Snow Leopard.

Did you try tossing the Freeway preferences file in your library folder? Have you tried completely deleting Freeway and reinstalling the newest version from scratch?

Yes to both of those. After the font comparison between the two machines, I just re-installed Freeway from the installer and trashed preferences also. Still no startup! Bizarre isn’t it?

Christopher, did you try Walter’s advice to make a new user and log into that and try it?

Hi Chris,

If Freeway won’t launch in the new user account, can you please send the full crash log in to support? The email address is support[@]softpress.com (I hope that shows up, I’m not really familiar with the filter system on here). The log is in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

This looks very much like you may want to delete your preferences and see if that fixes it. I believe there is a knowledge base article on the Softpress site that details where to find these and how to do it safely.

OK here are a couple of ideas:

First just so you feel good about Snow Leopard you may want to try the following:

  1. With the MacBook Pro plugged into power start up holding the T key.

  2. Connect a FireWire cable between Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.

  3. Restart or startup the MacPro and hold the Option Key until you see the MacBook Pro HD. Choose the MacBook Pro HD and finish booting. Now try Freeway Pro.

Note: wired keyboards and mice plugged into the MacPro are best for this test.

Now that you know your Mac Pro’s CPU/RAM loves Freeway just as much as the MacBook Pro try this next.

Download Cocktail and really clear your caches.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/cocktail_maintain.html

Then if you have it boot on DiskWarrior DVD and repair the MacPro HD. Some flavors of MacPro do not boot on last version of DiskWarrior although I do always recommend the latest version whenever possible.

As always make sure you have a current Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper backup before taking any drastic action. And one other and easy item to do is start Disk Utility from Utilities folder and “Repair Permissions” on your boot HD.

Hi Katie,

I tried Walter’s new user fix and it also failed to launch. Interestingly, I have a copy of Freeway 5 and Freeway 5.5 on my HD and both of them failed to launch, displaying the same error message. I’ll certainly send the log to you guys and I’ll have a look at some of the suggestions following your post too.

Many thanks for the responses and suggestions here!

I’m a big fan of Freeway so this is an unfortunate speed bump.
