From what I’ve seen, Chrome and Firefox in OSX treat untagged images as “device native RGB” by default, so it’s easy to get everything to match. Safari OSX on the other hand, treats all untagged images as sRGB and so converts them to the current display profile. It’s built into the app so there is no way to defeat it.
I have not tested how these browsers handle this issue on Windows or iOS, and I do not intend to do so.
I think the best result for my tastes involves transparent .png graphics which let the CSS background show through.
