[Pro] Gif text problems

I am building a new site and the gif text looks horrible. I have copied a gif text box from a previous site and pasted it into the new site. It was fine in the original site but now looks pants.

The original size was 3117 but the pasted copied box is 638!

All of the gif settings match – what am I doing wrong?

Can you help? This is pretty urgent.

When you say “GIF text” do you mean you’re using a Freeway graphic
box to set and generate brand new graphic text? Or do you mean you’re
importing and using a bitmap graphic that already exists?

Also, what exactly do you mean by ‘looks horrible’? Is there an
example online that we can see? It is hard to troubleshoot otherwise!
Sorry…

(BTW, if you do mean text that you’re setting directly in Freeway in
a graphic box, it is better to call this stuff “graphic text” rather
than “GIF text”. It won’t necessarily be in GIF format when it is
generated.)

Hi. Yes, I am drawing a graphic box and then inputing copy into that.

I am baffled because it has worked fine on every other site that I have created. Even importing graphic text from a previous site that looks great doesn’t work on this new site.

I haven’t uploaded the site (thank goodness) – so it’s difficult to show the problem. But the letterspacing is shot and the characters are bimapped.

I have just copied the offending graphic box from the new problem site and pasted it into a previous website… and lo and behold the graphic text looks great.

So what’s going on?

Is the box layered in one site document and not in the other?
What background image or colour is behind the graphic box?
You could try setting the graphic box to be output as a PNG at
millions of colours. Does that solve the ‘bitmapped’ effect?

The letterspace problem is more worrying. That sounds like weird font
settings problems. Does this happen if you draw a brand new box
somewhere on an empty part of the page?

I have uploaded an image:

http://www.stepbeyond.co.uk/te5t.html

I opened a new Freeway file and pasted in the two graphic text boxes on the left. I copied these and pasted them into the problem file – shown on the right.

Layers, backgrounds, etc make no difference. It does seem that file is corrupted. Can that happen? Is there a work-around, I really, really don’t want to start again.

There appear to be no other problems with the file apart from the graphic text.

What happens if you choose a different font? Try one of the built-in TrueType fonts – Georgia, for example – and see if it still shows those problems. What you’re describing (and the fact that the PNG didn’t fix it) seems like maybe your font has lost track of its outline file, and is operating on the bitmap (screen) font only.

Good idea, but I have tried that one. That does sound plausable though! Is there a fix?

The big problem is that I have almost finished the site and I believe it will be a big job to recreate it.

That’s pretty much what it looks like to me.

Graham, what fonts are these, precisely?

Any font I use!

Helvetica, Trebuchet, Futura… anything really!

The only reason I need the graphic text is for use as captions to images that appear when thumbnails are rolled over.

It was going so smoothly too!.

Have you upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6 by any chance? What version of
Freeway are you using?

No still on 10.5.8 on this ole G5. Freeway 5.4.2.

As I said this is the only site that has this problem.

I hate to step back from helping, but I think this is something the
official support folks might be best handling. It sounds weird.

But tell me one thing: if you make a new Freeway document and try
making a simple graphic box with text, does that work ok? If so, you
could copy/paste whole pages from the suspect document to a new one,
testing each time to see if the problem comes back.

There are other ways of doing this using target show/hide layer on an HTML box with HTML text.

I know this doesn’t fix your problem with graphic text but it would avoid the problem.

I though Target show/hide layer only worked with a graphic box?

Have you tried typing text in something like Photoshop to see if you get the same results?

I’d say if it was a system wide font problem, you’ll have it in all your apps.

The clue is in the name: Target show/hide layer

Target show/hide image is the one for images.
