[Pro] Google Analytics problem - I think!

Hi,

I am successfully running ‘Analytics’ on three of the sites I have created. No problem! Then along comes my wife and says she would really like that facility on her web site. So she set up a googlemail account and I register an Analytics number for the site.

I paste the number (UA-XXXXXXXX-X) into the folder action and upload. Now I can’t remember if the ‘STATUS’ on the Analytics page should change straight away to ‘active’ or whether the yellow warning triangle stays there until data starts feeding through in 24 hours or so. If’ it’s straight away, where hasn’t it changed. I have also assigned the page action to all the pages individually instead of the folder action just in case it was that.

Can anyone help? If I could work out where to get the code google sent me originally with the number in it, I would paste that too, but I can’t find it.

Thanks!

No its not an instant thing. You will have to wait a bit.

Right, it should take at least 24 hours to see tangible results, but remember it’s not in real-time. The stats might jump one day and be down on another. That’s why you have to dive into the individual page views and other tools that are offered in other areas to get accurate results.

Dan, Thanks. Will dig a little deeper than we have been. By the way, really like your tutorials. Any chance you’re going to produce more on more complex subjects like SSI, CMS and how to’s on integrating things like TiltViewer, FancyZoom etc. There are a lot of designers out there who need hand holding through these things.

Hello,
I have google analytics working, no problem on a few sites, published with Freeway. I have just added a new site.

Google does not see my (UA-XXXXXXXX-X). I paste it into the “site code” field in actions. I have tried with the “legacy code” option both on and off.

I have got google analytics to recognise and track the site by going to the source code and manually pasting in their script and uploading the html file. Obvioulsy doing this each time I upgrade the page is far from an ideal solution.

Any ideas?

PS: I just realised this is a Freeway Pro thread, i’m using express…

Can upload with Freeway again and post a link to the page please?

Thanks,

Thanks. You have two lots of GA code on the page and both have different UA IDs. The one from the Action is in the head tag and is using the ID “UA-6463087-3”, the one at the bottom of the page is, I’m guessing, the one you’ve added manually, and is using the ID “UA-6463087-5”.

The Action doesn’t change the ID, it just places it in the right bit of the code. Are you sure you were using the correct ID previously?

Thank you!

Of course, that must be it. It is a migrated site from an old host that went
out of business. The old ID must still be in there. Stupid of me.

So, the next question. Without manually deleting it from the code. How do I
get Freeway to loose the old ID so I can add the new?

I will try to turn off google analytics for all the pages, save and then
re-add that action as well as the new google ID - UA-6463087-5

It might have been added in the Page>HTML Markup dialog. Open up the dialog, look in the dropdown at the bottom for an underlined entry (it should be “Before ”, if it was entered that way) and remove the code that’s in there.

That should do it,

Great.

It is there.

So, just to verify / sum up.

  • Google Analytics did not recognise my ID because I had an older one in the
    code.
  • It was added a different way, through Page → HTML Markup and so can be
    deleted there.
  • Now, if i use the “automatic” option in the Actions pallette, google will
see it (even though it does not follow google instructions)

However, I assume, I could just replace google’s script in HTML markup
dialogue box? It would work just as well, assuming it is in the right place
in the code.

The Action uses the most up to date code so I would stick with that.
