[Pro] graphic stretch question...

I have an easy question.

I have my margin set at W=1000pxls

I have a nice glowing bar going across the top (1000pxls) and all of my page below stays within the 1000pxl limit.

(unable to show b/c I have not uploaded the site just yet)

My question is… how can I get the bar to run totally across the viewer’s screen from full left to full right? Just the bar. I want to keep the rest of the page with a defined margin of 1000 centered though.

Not sure how to do this easily.

here is an example of something similar, where their bar goes across total width of screen but below their page is within margins.

THANKS.

Barry

The easiest way to do this is to create a tiling background image for your page that continues the header graphic on to infinity. The header bar on the Freewaytalk.net site does this. Here’s the tiling background image:

page background

And here’s the header bar:

header bar

Note how they match up (one was simply sliced off of the other in Photoshop). One key thing to do here is use the same compression and image format for both: JPEG won’t butt up to GIF with any precision. The page background is set to tile horizontally and stick to the top of the page. The header bar image is set to no tile and to stick top and left to the header DIV.

Ok to start:

  1. I do not currently have a background page image, I use a color (leadblack).
Should/Do I need to make my page background a solid leadblack image in photoshop?

  2. My header image is not related at all to the black page. The only thing I want to extend across is a white glowing bar.

When I click on it, I do not see any options in inspector to “no tile and no stick up.” Are these options only for background images?

Does this change any directions you suggested?

Thanks again,

Barry

You can use a combination of background color and image. As long as your image ends in the same color as the page background color, it will appear to extend infinitely. The background color is the very lowest level, above that is the background image, and above that is any element placed on your page. Make this image a slice at least 25px wide and just tall enough to cover from the very top of the page down to just below where you want that white glowing bar to be.

That’s because it’s an image placed on the page, rather than a background image of a DIV. Makes no difference.

It shouldn’t
