[Pro] Help with changing DNS entries to point www. to SquareSpace

Hi,

I have a current DNS record for dantucker.co.uk which points to a HaveHost server, i want to point just the www bit to SquareSpace.
Obviously I do want to point ftp to SquareSpace too.

These are the current settings:

Record Type Data
dantucker.co.uk. A HaveHost i/p
dantucker.co.uk. MX5
ftp.dantucker.co.uk. CNAME www
mail.dantucker.co.uk. CNAME www
smtp.dantucker.co.uk. CNAME www
www.dantucker.co.uk. A HaveHost i/p

Could some very kind person who knows this DNS stuff please help me translate the instructions into straightforward instructions, I don’t want of make a mess of it!!!

SquareSpace say:

Step 1 - Create a CNAME Record

Alias - Should be www
(indicating that the www.yourdomain.com record should point to Squarespace)

Type - Should be CNAME
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using its name)

Points To - Should be www.squarespace6.com (do not use your Squarespace site address!)

Step 2 - Create an A Record

Within that same Zone File or DNS Management area of your domain provider’s interface, create an A Record which will point the version of your domain without the WWW to our IP Address (65.39.205.57).

Alias - Should be @ or the full domain yourdomain.com (indicating that yourdomain.com should point to Squarespace)

Type - Should be A Record
(indicating that you would like to point to Squarespace by using our IP Address)

Points To - Should be 65.39.205.57 (this points your domain to our IP Address)

Cheers TIA Peter

Maybe I should have sent this to the Dynamo list?

No, this is fine. These instructions look really clear to me, but I’ve been managing my own DNS for many years. Where is your DNS currently hosted? Is that on HaveHost, or at your registrar, or where else (lots of options here). Once you find that, you should be able to see the existing records, and create new ones. You’ll be making two records, one for www (as a CNAME – an alias-like thing that points one name at another name) and the other as an A record, which is the real meat and potatoes of the DNS – pointing a name at a true numerical address.

It depends a lot on where your DNS is currently set up how you do this and what the interface will look like.
